Less is sometimes more, and this is certainly true here: Introducing the Sweet Cream V2 from Tone City, a low-gain overdrive that delivers an impressively smooth core tone, while still boasting enormous flexibility thanks to its special Touch control, which is really the heart of the pedal. This dial isn't simply a high-cut filter – it controls both the brightness of the overdrive sound and adjusts how much of the dry signal is audible. This gives a guitarist immense control over the Sweet Cream's sound, which covers everything from dark and creamy through to bright and punchy, and all points in-between. This V2 incarnation of the pedal, launched in 2025, also features a tone control that allows the treble response to be adjusted, as well as a mini-toggle switch that gives players a choice of two gain and compression levels.
The Tone City Sweet Cream V2 emphasises the mid frequencies, making it what is known as a "mid-heavy" overdrive; this means players can use it to great effect as a booster (with minimal gain and plenty of volume) to make their solos cut through in a band context, or to push an already-driven amp into further saturation. At the same time, the Sweet Cream V2's dynamic tone-shaping capabilities make it an excellent "always-on" pedal, allowing players to accurately adjust the level of gain using their guitar's volume control. And the Sweet Cream V2 will also cut a fine figure when "stacked" with other gain pedals. However it's used, though, the pedal's simple and intuitive layout means players can get to grips with it very quickly, and the mini-toggle switch puts both the sound of the original Sweet Cream and an updated version with more gain and compression at the their fingertips.
It's impossible to count the number of overdrive pedals on the market today, and for some players, finding the "perfect" overdrive is a lifelong quest – but one that (for some at least) might just be at an end thanks to the Tone City Sweet Cream V2. The pedal's highly adaptable response and organic overall sound make it a great choice for guitarists in a wide range of genres, from Blues and Indie through to Classic Rock. It should be noted that players looking for a high-gain pedal for Metal and similar genres would be better off looking at other options, but for everyone else, this affordable overdrive offers an astonishing palette of sounds and works well with a variety of different pickups. As mentioned above, the mini-toggle switch that has been added to this version of the Sweet Cream gives the player an extra portion of gain when set to the left position.
Tone City is a guitar effects manufacturer that is based in China and specialises in manufacturing pedals that are compact and affordable but do not make any compromises in terms of sound or build quality. The company quickly gained a good reputation, particularly among guitarists looking for the sound of boutique gear in a space-saving format. Tone City creates modern interpretations of classic circuits, which are served up in intuitive, user-friendly pedals with a sturdy metal construction. The company’s pedals are renowned for their organic tonal characteristics and impressive dynamics, and they are ideal for pedalboard-based setups thanks to their sophisticated circuit board layouts and true-bypass switching. With an ever-expanding product range that includes everything from overdrives and modulation effects through to delays, Tone City offers musicians a viable alternative to expensive boutique pedals.
Overdrive sounds are very much a matter of personal preference, but good doesn't have to mean expensive, and players can absolutely obtain sounds that are good enough to record albums and take on tour using affordable pedals. Who knows how many legendary guitar sounds will be created using the Tone City Sweet Cream V2? While the pedal's tiny footprint makes it extremely easy to fit into a pedalboard setup, however, it does also mean that there's no space for a battery, so a suitable 9V power supply that can provide at least 6mA will be required. Whatever the application, though, players on the hunt for a high-quality dynamic overdrive are sure to find a lot to love about this diminutive, true-bypass pedal.
