Guitar Effects

With the new generation of pedals and a plethora of digital gems, the tradition of good, old-fashioned analogue sounds is still preserved.

The Mojomojo is an overdrive that offers its own approach. Primarily intended for giving tube amps the desired touch "more", the Mojomojo is characterised by its unusual simultaneous combination of clarity and little compression. This means that the sound remains clear and dynamic, even when the amp is really made to sweat. In this sense, it is more like a good old tweed amp than a TS-type pedal. It is the perfect match for many blues players, but also for rockers who, despite a desire for substantial distortion, have no intention of producing a flat-ironed carpet of sound. An additional bass control (treble/tone is standard) prevents the thinning that is a well-known trait of green-coloured overdrives (which many also enjoy). Nice: turn down the volume control on your guitar, and the sound clears up as with a good amp.

S
MojoMojo: good overdrive pedal
Stephen6150 18.07.2015
I use this pedal with a lap steel guitar and with my Tele and Strat. As the lap steel has a P90 pickup, and the Fenders obviously have single coils, I can't comment on how well this pedal suits instruments equipped with humbuckers.

The pedal is true by-pass, well-built and well-finished. The case is aluminium. The battery compartment is accessible by undoing a screw with the side of a coin, which is handy if you don't have a screwdriver to hand (but obviously not as handy as a Boss-type spring loaded compartment). The pedal can also be operated with any 9V (negative centre) mains adapter.

There are four knobs - drive, level, bass and treble - whose function is self-explanatory. They all offer a good range of adjustability. It's useful to have separate treble and bass controls instead of a single tone knob. In addition, there is a two-position mini-toggle switch to adjust the pedal's bass response.

How does is it sound? Well, if, like me, you dislike heavily distorted guitars, the MojoMojo offers a good level of overdrive that is not over-the-top. I play my lap steel through a transistor bass guitar amp with a 15-inch speaker, and the pedal allows me to add an appealing raunchiness when play blues riffs in Open E. My Strat and Tele go into a Vox AC15, and this pedal adds a great lead sound to the jangly tone of the latter amp. The pedal's bass response is good, although the mini-toggle switch is fairly subtle in its effect.

In conclusion, this is a good overdrive pedal, and excellent value for money, if you want an overdriven sound rather than heavy distortion. In my view, it is ideal for playing solos on single coil guitars while preserving the basic tone of those guitars.

Jack of all trades
Trey 04.04.2020
Got this pedal after being a long time fan of Paul Gilbert, but was I surprised at its capabilities. To break it down:

I intended to use it mainly as an EQ/preamp almost at the start of my signal chain, to beef up the sound when needed, much like Gilbert does. After getting the pedal, I got to work with it for a few months and it has proven itself a real jack of all trades. Be it as boost, an od, bordering a distortion or simply an eq curving tool it was great.

Clarity-wise it can go from all out thick roaring sound, rich in low mids, to trasperent frequency boosting best for heating or melting a tube amp's front end. It could help to think of Godzilla by Racer X as its easy playground, when put in-front of a slightly cranked British amp. Riffs and leads alike can be worked out with this one.

Now one can not really fault anything at it at this price point. While the price would suggest poor construction it is totally NOT true. It is built like a tank, great casing, great switch.

To sum up, buy it. It is surely at a price point that it wont break the bank, and it will surprise you with its potential. In case mine got stolen or ever broke down, I would certainly replace it.

If it's on Paul Gilbert's board, it's staying on mine.

I use it in a different way than him though, since he likes to use it with a beefier more bassy setting, I prefer it with the switch down and cutting the base a bit. I mainly use it combined with a TC Electronics Spark and or Dark Matter and dial in the sound with either of those on. Combined with different amp models, you can get any type of overdrive tone you can think of, and beautifully so. From light-medium intensity overdrive all the way up light-medium distortion at the very extreme of the gain knob, very versatile.

For this price nothing comes close

Being a Paul Gilbert fan known for using this pedal extensively, I was interested to see what sound this little box can produce.

For around 50? this pedal produces a lot, and I have to say more than a lot of boutique pedals.

The key word for this pedal is subtle, it is not all out distortion but produces a very realistic loud amp break up into overdrive.

The tone controls are very useful to tailor the sound and allow you to produce a wide range of overdrive tones. Due to the low amount of drive, you can use this as a clean boost, but best results are just as your amp goes slightly dirty, use this pedal to push it a little more.

This is a really nice, rock / blues pedal. I also have the Dark Matter which takes you to the other end of the spectrum.

As I say for 50? there is very little competition from other manufacturers, therefore I can only recommended this even to just have for emergencies in the gig bag.

Great purchase from Thomann.
