Did somebody say Gilmour?
There are few musicians more closely associated with a great sense of feeling, emotional solos, and inventive sound textures than David Gilmour. Since 1967, he's built that reputation through his work with the Rock giants Pink Floyd, as well as a range of other projects. Today, he's widely regarded as one of the most innovative guitarists in the history of modern music. Naturally, a player known for such a refined and distinctive tone also has exacting expectations when it comes to equipment. The active EMG DG20 David Gilmour prewired pickguard offers a simple plug‑and‑play solution for giving any ST‑style guitar the legendary character that has defined Gilmour's sound since 1985. Alongside the EMG SA pickups, the pickguard also features an active tone circuit, allowing the sound to be shaped with impressive – indeed, Gilmour-esque! – flexibility to suit almost any playing situation.
Assertive and powerful, subtle and expansive
At heart, this pickup set takes its cues from vintage designs, but pairs them with a more assertive, hi‑fi character. The pickups – in a classic SSS configuration – deliver a powerful sound that, thanks to their impressive dynamic range, really brings out the nuances and accents of individual playing styles. The clear, well‑defined tonal structure, combined with a subtle touch of compression, creates a focused, cutting sound, while still shining in crystal‑clear clean passages. Added to this are two interactive tone controls, for an exceptional degree of flexibility. The SPC Presence Control provides a broad lift in the midrange, making it easy to cut through the mix, for an instant solo boost when it's needed. Conversely, the EXG Guitar Expander works in the opposite direction, enhancing bass and treble while reducing upper mids, resulting in a noticeably fuller, more expansive sound.
More than Metal
For many guitarists, EMG pickups are still closely associated with 1980s metal – of course, that connection isn't entirely off the mark, as EMGs certainly excel there too. In this case, though, these active pickups are single coils, not humbuckers, and they turn out to be far more versatile than one might expect at first glance. As such, the EMG DG20 David Gilmour pickguard delivers convincing clean and mid‑gain sounds that hold up beautifully across a wide range of musical settings, from Country through to Classic rock. Anyone looking to give their ST‑style guitar a fresh voice – one marked by a fast, direct response and a highly adaptable tonal range – will find plenty to explore in this set inspired by the sound titan that is David Gilmour.
About EMG
Founded in 1976 by Rob Turner, EMG is an American company whose iconic pickups have shaped the sound of electric guitars and basses for nearly five decades. Renowned for their low-noise performance and crystal-clear, punchy tone, EMG's active pickups are a staple in heavier genres, while their preamp-equipped models – with their articulate, dynamic response – also appeal to Jazz and Funk players. Today, EMG's extensive lineup of active and passive pickups continues to inspire artists like David Gilmour, Steve Lukather, and Zakk Wylde, cementing its reputation as a legendary name in guitar tone.
No more noise floor
Thanks to their active electronics, the pickups in the DG20 pickguard set operate with extremely low noise. As single coils with Alnico V magnets, they perform reliably across just about any gain structure. This makes them a genuine all‑round tool on stage and in the studio, as a clean signal is all but guaranteed, without an intrusive noise floor – at least not one introduced by the guitar itself! Should any issues arise, the source will usually be found elsewhere in the setup. Because the active pickups are boosted by an integrated preamp, they require a 9V battery. Depending on how the system is installed, this is either placed underneath the pickguard or housed in a separate battery compartment in the guitar body. When the instrument isn't in use, the guitar cable should be unplugged from the output jack, as the pickups will otherwise continue to draw power, meaning the battery will need replacing more often.
