Classic looks, complex sound

With the Caz series, the Turkish cymbal specialist Zultan has created a collection of extremely inexpensive handcrafted cymbals made of premium B20 bronze. Their sound profile has been carefully tuned to make them ideal for Jazz, as well as other genres that tend towards the mellow. The cymbals are manufactured in Turkey using methods that have remained more or less unchanged for centuries, with a great emphasis on skilled handcraft – the simple, classic look of the cymbals is just as traditional as the workmanship itself. The Caz range includes numerous Crash, Crash/Ride, Ride, Sizzle Ride, and Hi-Hat models; two pre-configured sets are also available.

Quality craftsmanship at a competitive price

Merely mentioning handcrafted cymbals from Turkey is enough to get knowledgeable drummers and percussionists pricking up their ears. However, a look at the prices involved will often have their jaws dropping, too. This is exactly where Zultan's Caz cymbals come in: Rarely has so much musical mojo been available for so little money. Now, some of the premium models from the established brands truly are outstanding – but the Caz cymbals, which are completely hand-lathed and hammered over their entire surface, are extremely competitive contenders. The 20" ride here brings a full, warm, earthy sound – with fine treble detail and surprisingly silvery stick definition.

Jazz in Turkish

Caz is simply the Turkish word for Jazz, and it's clear that these cymbals have been designed with that very purpose in mind. Jazz drummers need light instruments that react to the gentlest touch and deliver a balanced, harmonious sound across all dynamic levels, from soft to loud. Of course, this applies not only to Jazz, but to genres like Blues, Funk, Latin, and Soul, where Caz cymbals can also be played to their strengths. As such, this 20" ride can be used in a variety of ways, delivering just the right sound for each of the aforementioned genres, and responding well to rods or brushes, too.

The firm’s practice of selling directly to the end customer makes it possible to offer very customer-friendly prices. Nevertheless, the production process for Zultan’s trademark cymbals, which are made mainly in Turkey, is of the highest quality, a fact which has ensured they have also been a fixture in the Thomann range since 2011. Thanks to the use of high-quality materials and manufacturing expertise, Zultan really does offer uncompromising quality at a reasonable price.

Zultan 20" Caz Ride, Jazz cymbal

Jazz is just the beginning…

The Zultan Caz cymbals may have Jazz in their name, but can be used almost universally and are at home wherever pleasant, balanced cymbals are required – they have a warm sound spectrum without jarring frequencies. This is the case for all kinds of acoustic, unamplified music, which might include unplugged guitar sessions, but also live Salsa gigs or Gospel concerts in churches. Of course, there's nothing to stop Caz cymbals being used with amplified music too, as long as they're played sensitively and with the right tools. The Zultan 20" Caz Ride is a very versatile plate, ready to be the reliable centrepiece of almost any drumkit; its warm articulation and stable sustain means it'll harmonise with the other elements of a kit and the rest of the band beautifully.

J
Zultan 20” Caz Ride Cymbal
Jonathan165 16.02.2014
I am an amateur percussionist and purchased this along with the Caz 14” hi-hat and snare to lay down some jazzy-feel rhythm backing for home recording as well as embellishing some conga / latin based rhythms. This cymbal has met all my expectations – it has a really nice hand hammered finish with a lovely range of tones and response across its surface with a shimmering sustain. It is widely responsive to sticks, hot-rods and brushes – my personal favourite with hot-rods with which you can achieve a very wide variety of responses, all of which are nicely consistent which gives you great confidence when playing. The bell is nice and shallow which for me provides the perfect tone alongside the other sounds across the surface. The cymbal responds well when crashed so if you were toying between a larger crash cymbal or a ride, this may suit. The cymbal also has a fantastic bloom when played with a felt stick. I did consider the ‘sizzle’ version of this cymbal which looks and sounds excellent from what I understand, though I did want the flexibility of no sizzle so have matched this with a Pro Mark chain-sizzler. I did I initially struggle to get a decent sustain with this sizzle, though experimenting with the pitch of the cymbal and how you lay the chain (straight or slightly coiled) can improve this greatly. If you are going to use ‘sizzle’ a lot or all the time or have a large range of cymbals I would definitely seriously consider the ‘sizzle’ version of the Caz ride range. Not being a drummer I have no great experience of cymbals, I do however think this is a super cymbal for lighter playing such as some lighter touch jazz / blues, this is perfect and won’t break the bank.

High Quality & versatile
Anonymous 21.10.2016
I play all styles and this is great as an all purpose cymbal. I often just use it with a pair of hihats. Many great sounds all over the bow and the bell, and it's also a very responsive crash.

One downside is that the cymbal isn't evenly weighted and if you mount it on an angle it will rotate until the heavier side is nearest to me, meaning there's an uneven distribution of wear which will sting me later. Having said that I didn't send it back as I didn't really want to be without the cymbal during the return process. This is likely because of the hand made quality, many of these won't share this issue.

Z
I love it

- Beautiful sounding
- Hand hammered
- Made in turkey

This cymbal is not a cheap one, this is a high quality one. I don't understand why it costs 1/3 compared to others with the same quality. The sound is really clear, full of sweet harmonics, and very warm but also shiny at the same time. I use it as a ride but when I need a deep crash sound, I crash it and it sounds amazingly good as a crash too, I guess because it's light.

It's really versatile, from jazz to rock, just perfect for indie like music (I wouldn't use them for metal). I bought together the Caz 17'' crash and the Caz 19'' crash/ride, and together with the 17'' crash, it's my favourite cymbal so far.

Zultan is incredible, I recommend them to everyone

i've 3 of these

this is a fantastic crash ride. the bell isn't amazing so if you need a crashable ride with a crispy bell sound, this one is not for you. but overall, i loved it so much i've purchased 3 over the years.
that's because it's a little fragile... but that was probably me crashing it too hard and too often.
