A complete audio production hub
The Yamaha MGX16 is a powerful 16‑channel digital mixing console that builds upon a distinguished legacy with an updated feature set. Its analogue predecessor, the MG series, has long established itself as an industry standard. Now, the MGX16 adds flexible digital functionality to Yamaha's tried-and-tested build quality. It's equipped with versatile features designed to make it work intuitively in a wide range of applications. Yamaha's core concept here is sound quality and effortless operation – everything to a professional standard. The MGX16 is based on a fully digital mixing engine that combines precise signal processing with a familiar workflow. Physical faders and controls allow quick, organic mixing, while the 4.3‑inch touchscreen gives users clear access to channel processing, routing, and system configuration.
Inputs, outputs, and digital signal
The MGX16's eight premium-quality microphone preamps, mounted on combo XLR/TRS inputs, provide up to 86dB of clean gain with very low distortion, offering ample headroom for a wide range of signals. Four stereo channels – two on balanced TRS inputs and two on RCA inputs – allow additional devices to be connected, including Bluetooth audio. The mixer's output section is equally flexible, with two XLR main outputs, eight TRS OMNI outputs for monitoring or external routing, and four headphone outputs. This architecture supports multiple monitor mixes, auxiliary sends, and integration with outboard equipment or into larger setups. The two internal FX buses and dedicated Sound Pad channel bring the total channel count to 22.
Intuitive audio processing
The Yamaha MGX16 combines a familiar analogue workflow with onboard digital processing and effects. Each channel features EQ, compression, and gating, while two internal FX buses allow reverb and delay to be applied via a traditional send-based workflow. Additional processing such as vocal pitch correction, guitar amp simulation, and multi-band compression is also available. The 4.3" touchscreen provides clear visual feedback for channel parameters, routing, and effects, supported by Yamaha's Touch and Turn control for precise, real-time adjustment. A dedicated Sound Pad channel enables playback and triggering of audio directly from microSD, adding further flexibility for live or production use. The onboard DSP operates with minimal latency, allowing real-time monitoring of processed signals and smooth operation in both live and recording contexts.
About Yamaha
For decades, Yamaha has been one of the world's best-known manufacturers of musical instruments and audio technology. The Japanese company's long history began at the end of the 19th century with the harmonium. The product range has constantly expanded since then, which has made Yamaha one of the few manufacturers today to offer almost the entire range of existing musical instruments: From upright and grand pianos to guitars, wind instruments, and bowed string instruments and from drums and percussion to electronic keyboards and synthesizers. Yamaha is also a major force in the field of audio engineering as a manufacturer of mixing consoles, amplifiers, PA systems, and more. Yamaha's guiding principle is to combine traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology.
Comprehensive production tools
This digital mixer is aimed at professional and semi-professional users across a wide range of pro-audio applications, from live performance and recording to streaming and broadcasting. Its dual USB architecture is designed for seamless DAW integration, with the MAIN connection supporting up to 22 simultaneous channels of recording and playback, while the SUB USB stereo I/O can be used for streaming, backup recording, or external playback. Direct recording to microSD removes the need for a computer in mobile setups and provides redundancy in live or studio environments, while Bluetooth audio allows wireless sources to be brought into the mix. The Yamaha MGX16 can easily switch between roles, from live sound and multitrack recording to content creation and hybrid production workflows. The included software bundle, featuring Cubase AI, WaveLab Cast, Steinberg Plus, and the Basic FX Suite, ensures a smooth transition into DAW-based recording and post-production.
In the spotlight
MGX and MGX-V
The MGX16V features additional HDMI connectivity, with both an HDMI input and pass-through output allowing video signals to be routed through the mixer alongside audio. In practice, a video source such as a camera or computer can be connected, transmitting video in real time while the processed audio is combined into a single AV stream over USB. When used with streaming or recording software, the MGX12V functions as both an audio interface and a video capture bridge. The core mixing architecture and DSP remain unchanged, while the added HDMI capability makes it particularly suited to live streaming, hybrid events, and content creation workflows, including audio-for-video video production. Users working purely with audio may favour the MGX16 here, while the MGX16V offers a more complete AV solution.
