An acoustic bass from the specialists

Warwick RockBass Alien Standard 5 Black Fretless, five-string bass

Warwick has been one of Germany's go-to names for all things low-end for decades nows, and that expertise shines through once again in the Warwick RockBass Alien Standard 5 Fretless acoustic five-string bass. Premium woods with Warwick's classic Satin Black finish give this fine fretless instrument both its elegant appearance and its expressive sound. And when needed, that sound can be amplified and shaped to taste thanks to the onboard pickup and built-in preamp. The Alien Standard 5 FL's 34" scale length and low B string gives this instrument plenty of power, and some other highlights – besides the fretless ebony fingerboard – include the high-end hardware, a handy thumb rest, a generous cutaway, and a gig bag with tools included. Considering the features and build quality, the Alien Standard five-string fretless offers excellent value for money.

Exquisite ingredients

The top of an acoustic instrument plays an absolutely crucial role in giving it a balanced sound – so on the Warwick RockBass Alien Standard 5 FL, it's made from solid sitka spruce, a top-tier choice. The neck is crafted from mahogany, while the back and sides are made from agathis, also known as kauri spruce. The ebony fingerboard features 24 discreet fretlines to help keep players oriented; it's complemented by a bridge and thumb rest made from wenge, a visually very similar wood, for a consistent look and feel. The Alien Standard has a nut width of 45mm, slim for a five-string, making it especially easy on the hands. High-quality chrome hardware, produced in-house, includes Warwick's signature adjustable nut and security locks system. And if this acoustic Alien's volume isn't quite enough, the built-in Sonicore piezo pickup and Sonitone preamp, both from Fishman, will be happy to help.

From the stage to the garden to the beach

Since the late '90s at the very latest, an acoustic or unplugged set has been an essential part of every band's live repertoire. Of course, this means everyone – including the bass player – needs to bring along the right instrument, one that looks the part and sounds it too. Luckily, the Alien passes these tests with flying colours, with its fretless fingerboard giving the instrument's sound a certain lyrical 'je ne sais quoi'. But it's not just built for the stage – it's also perfect for backyard acoustic sessions or simply jamming on the beach, since there's no need to rely on power outlets for amplification. Thanks to its relatively compact size for a five-string, the Alien acoustic bass is easy to transport, making it a great travelling companion. With its attractive pricing, the Warwick RB Alien Standard 5 Fretless is also a strong contender for an ambitious bassist's second or third instrument – certainly, it'll add something genuinely unique and useful to any collection.
