All tubes: A very British sound

The TWS Lulis Signature head is a single-channel all-tube amp for electric guitar, co-designed by Accept guitarist Uwe Lulis. As such, it delivers the classic British amp sound that's been a favourite of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal guitarists since the 1980s. What makes it stand out is the ability to switch between two preamp modes, for both JTM and JCM-style tones. With an output of 50W RMS, this Class A/B amplifier is perfectly proportioned for gigs in small venues, as well as studio recording. A three-band EQ, with an expanded mid control, offers a wide range of tonal possibilities, while two full-size jack outputs connect to speakers and can be set at the flick of a switch to run 4, 8, or 16-ohm cabs. The guitar signal can also be routed through to an additional amp, and a true-bypass FX loop rounds off the Lulis Signature's raft of features. Another little highlight is the RGB interior lighting, which can be controlled via a smartphone app.

Transparent distortion

The TWS Lulis Signature head is built around a trio of 12AX7 preamp tubes, covering tones from Blues to Metal, complemented by two EL34 power tubes that deliver a sound that's at once warm and aggressive. The preamp overdrive can be activated by a push/pull switch on the amp, or controlled using the three-button footswitch that the amp ships with - the footswitch also controls the integrated A/B box. Because the overdrive circuit is activated before the preamp, there's none of that muddy low-end distortion, or indeed excessive high-end boost. The TWS WonderVol master volume control, such an effective feature on the other amps made by TWS, comes in a duo here: Musicians can use the footswitch to choose between the two controls' settings for two independent volume-and-tone setups –perfect for jumping back and forth between rhythm and lead guitar tones.

For really demanding guitarists

Guitarists who know exactly what they want in terms of both tone and hardware will feel right at home with the TWS Lulis Signature. Its 188mm-thick birch plywood cabinet provides excellent protection for the amp's inner workings, on stage and on the road, with the all-tube electronics housed in a sturdy aluminium chassis. This is a genuinely hand-built German amp, and all the electrical connections are soldered point-to-point, eliminating the need for plug connectors and unnecessary wiring. This ensures minimal contact resistance and an exceptionally clean sound, while also preventing loose connections caused by corrosion, and at no point does any mechanical movement have an effect on the electronics, so maintenance is minimal. As with the other devices from TWS, the amp is compatible with mains voltage in both Europe and the USA.

About TWS

Tube WorkShop (TWS) is a young German company founded by a seasoned guitarist and audio electronics engineer. TWS offers handcrafted guitar amplifiers tailored for players who demand exceptional tonal quality and emotional depth from their amps. TWS amplifiers combine superior craftsmanship with the musical complexity inspired by vintage amps. Their designs primarily utilise valve (tube) technology, focusing on sound, tactile feedback, and aesthetic appeal. TWS's lineup includes combo amps, amp heads, and matching speaker cabinets. Additionally, they offer custom amp designs, tailored to meet individual customer specifications.

From Blues to Hard Rock

The TWS Lulis Signature all-tube head delivers a whole variety of gritty British sounds, always with plenty of presence. In JTM mode, the amp offers a rather more restrained overdrive, perfect for Blues, Rock, and Alternative tunes. This gives classic Blues songs a pleasantly authentic character, while lending modern Rock songs a touch of vintage flair. For added brilliance at the flick of a switch, the amp also has a Bright function, and for the hard-rocking high-gain tones of the 1980s, guitarists can switch to JCM mode, bringing significantly more gain into play - and the Deep switch adds even more punch. For musicians who might be using this overdrive head alongside a second amp specifically chosen for clean tones, the TWS footswitch can route the signal to the B output, sending the signal to that second amp. Equally, they can use this function to mute the head's output when no second amp is connected – or simply hook up a tuner to output B!
