The flexible booster

Thorn Soundlabs, a fresh name from the U.S., gives guitarists true analogue control over their sound with The Freaq – an exceptionally flexible double stage booster pedal. The Freaq is built for players who want more than just a standard boost. Whether pushing overdrive and distortion pedals to their limits or adding clarity and presence to cut through the mix, it delivers both power and precision. Featuring a high-pass filter and a fully parametric mid band that can be activated independently, The Freaq lives up to its name as a true double stage booster – offering flexible tone-shaping and standout performance in any setup. True to the Thorn Soundlabs aesthetic, The Freaq comes in a striking retro design inspired by 1960s Hollywood B-movie graphics, complementing its bold tone with an unmistakable style.

So many clever features

The Thorn The Freaq double stage boost comes in a sturdy metal housing measuring 94x123.5x53mm – about the size of two standard pedals. The main boost level is set using the Boost control, while the Damping high-pass filter allows for precise shaping of the low-end. The pedal also features a dedicated footswitch to activate or deactivate the boost. When bypassed, the signal remains unaffected thanks to a hardwired true bypass circuit. The second circuit boosts the midrange frequency, which can be set anywhere between 200Hz and 3.4kHz; it's also possible to cut this frequency instead of boosting it. The Freaq can be powered with a standard 9V power supply, but it really comes to life at 18V, providing increased headroom and enhanced dynamic response.

Complete control

The Thorn The Freaq double stage boost amplifies the signal while preserving its original character, making it ideal for bringing key sections like solos to the front of the mix without touching the amp settings. Boost pedals are commonly paired with overdrive and distortion to add depth, saturation, and complexity to a guitarist's tone. The Freaq excels at such applications thanks to its unique Damping control that filters out excess low-end, keeping the sound tight, focused, and well-defined even at higher gain levels. A standout feature is the ability to boost or cut the midrange band, allowing precise control over resonance frequencies. Whether highlighting the sweet spot of the gear with a mid boost or dialling in transparent high-gain metal tones with a mid cut, The Freaq offers powerful tone-shaping possibilities. It's the perfect choice for guitarists seeking a flexible booster that provides maximum control over their sound.

A match made in heaven

For many guitarists, a booster and a tube amp are a match made in heaven, especially when the amp is dialled right to its break-up point, just before it naturally overdrives. A booster gives solos that extra push, driving the amp into rich, saturated tones. The Thorn The Freaq double stage boost takes this classic pairing up a notch. With its independently switchable mid boost, The Freaq lets players precisely target the frequencies that make their amp sing – or cut unwanted resonances for a cleaner, tighter response. What’s long been a must-have combo for guitarists has now been given a serious upgrade: More control, more clarity, and more power with Thorn Soundlabs' The Freaq double stage boost.
