A studio to go

The SC 420 USB Set is a complete and easy-to-use package aimed at budding audio engineers, home-studio enthusiasts, and podcasters alike. A simple USB connection and your recording voice are all you will require to get started! It also features a useful headphone output for zero-latency monitoring. A foam pop filter is also included to guard against plosives, as are a suspended shock mount (to minimise vibrations and handling noises) and a round table stand. The whole package is very attractively priced, providing a professional-grade audio recording solution for the many.

Rich sound

Large-diaphragm microphones such as the SC 420 USB are valued for their high sensitivity and accurate rendition. In addition, their proximity effect is more pronounced than that of small-capsule mics – in other words, the closer you are to the microphone when speaking or singing, the warmer your voice will become. The same effect will apply to other sound sources such as guitars and pianos. Large-diaphragm microphones are extremely versatile, and every studio should have at least one. Podcasters will also appreciate the richness and “radiophonic” quality of their sound.

Plug & play

The SC 420 USB eliminates the need for an audio interface, preamp, and all associated cables – which is ideal if you’re impatient to get started, or on the road a lot. Thanks to its plug & play functionality, the microphone works out of the box with both Windows and Mac operating systems without needing to install any drivers. The integrated headphone output allows you to directly monitor the input signal without any latency. The SC 420 USB is primarily aimed at podcasters and singers who want to record in a home-studio environment, which is why the package includes a pop filter, a table stand, and a shock mount.

About the t.bone

Since 1994, the t.bone has been one of Thomann’s in-house brands, and its name can be found on devices such as headphones, wireless systems, in-ear equipment, and various microphones and matching accessories. “the t.bone” products are made exclusively by renowned companies who also manufacture products for other well-known brands. This provides a clear advantage: Brand-quality products at very reasonable prices. And word gets around: One in seven Thomann customers has already bought at least one product from the t.bone.

A saviour in many situations

The frequency response of the SC 420 USB features a slight bump at around 10kHz, adding a subtle yet recognizable shine to the voice that is often found in professional recordings. In addition, the SC 420 USB has a cardioid polar pattern, which effectively attenuates unwanted sounds and interference from its back and sides. Room and ambient noises are thus kept to a minimum, even if the home studio does not have the proper acoustic treatment.

Good entry level microphone
Triodes 07.12.2020
TIP FOR OWNERS:
I read a lot of comments about the headphone jack being to loud. This can be adjusted in the software on your computer!
On both windows and mac the mic registers itself as both an INPUT and OUTPUT device.

On windows the input device allows only the configuration of the mic volume going to the applications. But the output device allows you to set the level of PC sound going to the headphone jack AND the level of the mic going to the headphone jack. They can be set individually and the mic pass-through can even be muted altogether so you won't hear yourself anymore!

On mac you can adjust the mic through the MIDI application. I have not found a setting to adjust the pass-through volume of the mic to the headphone jack, but you can mute the pass-through using a checkbox.

Go try for yourself :P

On to THE REVIEW:

This microphone gives some absolute bang for the buck. The sound quality is good. It will pick up most sounds in the room though, so it won't be suitable in noisy environments. As soon as you move yourself away from the mic the sound will get more 'hollow' and will lose much of it's low end, but that is to be expected.

I have had the mic working on windows, mac and even android using a usb-c to usb-a otg adapter.

The build quality is not outstanding, but for this price I would rate it very good. The mic itself is lighter than I would have expected. The metal casing seems rather thin, but it is sturdy enough. The stand is perfect, it's heavy and has soft padding at the bottom. It can be easily moved but its weight makes sure it won't move by itself.

The mute button is very useful, but it's click when un-muting is picked up by the mic very badly to the point of clipping. They should have used a non-clicky button in my opinion.

I'm using this mic for discord/gaming and work conference calls. I'm not wearing headphones during these and I get no complaints about people hearing themselves, so the echo seems minimal. I would expect others to be able to hear my keyboard, but they haven't complained about it yet. I do often mute the mic using the button when I'm not speaking though.

One last thing to note is that the inside of the metal grating holding the diaphragm is lit up by a bright blue led. I don't really need this and it can be a tad annoying when the room is dark. I simply put the foam cover over it and now it is barely visible.

All things considered I would definitely recommend this microphone if you're on a budget.

q
T-bone SC420 USB desktop mic
quinnie2018 05.03.2022
I bought this for my daughter to record some pieces for her music work at school.

The mic is fairly solid, and comes in a nice case.

The sound quality is acceptable, but the convenience of USB is mainly why I chose it. My daughter can just plug it in and use it, and there is a headphone connector so she can use the mic as the monitoring point.

I have owned better condenser microphones, but they were more expensive and needed a digital interface with phantom power. The mic is probably aimed at podcasters, but my daughter has used it to record piano, flute and vocals and it worked fine - no drivers to install or any of those hassles.

For approx £50 it was better quality than I had expected so I was pleased with it.

It's a saviour!
CayeMusic 05.01.2021
As a pro, I own some great mics from Shure, AKG and Neumann.
Apart from the studio, I do Music Production lessons and seminars which turned out to be internet only (thanks Covid-19) and got really tired of having preamps or at least a soundcard open, get the mic out of the case, xlr cables etc....
I wanted something to help my voice get heard and super easy to work with, no matter if I'm with my laptop or the desktop, home or in the studio...
Well it does the job! And this is what counts the most!
Pros:
-plug n play
-well build
-great mini stand
-decent sound for internet calls and seminars

Cons:
-in that price range and for what it offers, I can't find any.

Conclusion:
DON't get it if you want to record for your next single or album.
GET IT if all you need is a mic to help you sound decent in the internet, podcasts and video tutorials.

I would happily spend 50€ ONLY for the great case, the mic foam, the popfilter and the mini mic stand. :)

Great budget mic
Headless cross 01.12.2021
This microphone has got to be the best budge microphone i have owned so far. Not only is it stupidly cheap, it also comes with pop-filter, stand and a really cool case. And all that for barely 60 Euros.
I don't have any complains about the product other than that blue light that is emitted every time mic is plugged on. It's really distracting. Sound quality is pretty much what you can expect from a cheap microphone. It does it's job but it's obviously not for recording studio quality vocals.

Overall this microphone is damn awesome, Definitely recommended.
