The SSL 611 DYN combines a VCA compressor with a gate/expander, typically positioned between the preamp and EQ to give precise control over individual tracks. The compressor offers adjustable ratio and threshold, with timing that can be switched between linear and logarithmic behaviour, a variable release, and two fixed attack settings complemented by a selectable curve. The gate and expander functions add further flexibility with independent range, threshold, and release controls, and ultra-fast attack options. Faithful to SSL tradition, the module omits sidechain, stereo link, and make-up gain, maintaining the brand’s distinctive design – densely packed yet cleanly laid out, colourful, and effortless to use.

About SSL

Solid State Logic (SSL), is a renowned British manufacturer of high-end mixing consoles and hardware. It was founded in 1969 by Colin Sanders and is based in Begbroke, Oxfordshire. Initially the company developed transistors to control church organs, hence the name Solid State Logic. At the end of the 1970s they made huge advances in the domain of large mixing consoles with the 4000 series which pioneered the oncoming era of the ‘super’ consoles. Later, the 6000 and 9000 series also proved to be a great success and are still being used in countless recording studios all over the world. In 2005, Peter Gabriel and David Engelke took a majority stake in the company and then sold it to the Audiotonix Group in 2017.

Great dynamic module

A handy 500 series that I purchased together with the SSL EQ module and Buzz Audio Mic pre. I intended to use this for a stereo recording set up for guitar and sometimes Vocal.

Build quality
Great and professional looking with all the classic elements.

Ease of use
Typical dynamic parameters and pretty handy for set up.

Sound quality
Great warm and smooth sound. The gate function is very important to minimise the white noise created for the compressor in. It does not change that much the sound quality. I am extremely happy with its presence with my pre amp and eq module. I tested it with a Beyerdynamic M88 dynamic mic for a guitar strumming session. Great flat sound and make a lot of difference to the recording. It is also great for finger picking style.

Overall
Great 500 series module and given the price tag and sound quality, it should be a must go for pop/rock song production

I miss make-up gain

The unit works perfectly. The gate function is amazing. And the compressor is very subtle and nice in the over-easy configuration. At the same time it can work in a faster attack setting that is way more aggressive.

I miss having make-up gain. The manual says this is automatic, but I'd crank it a bit more most of the time... anyway.

that SSL sound, a little rough build quality

sounds like an SSL should sound, that's why i bought it. only negative comment i can give is that the pots are a little cheap looking/feeling. also it has no enclosure, all the electronics are exposed. but i mostly care about the sound, which is amazing.

Sucht man SSL würdige Vergleichprodukte im 19" Format muss man schon das doppelte ausgeben. Der 611 DYN als System 500-Ausführung ist absolute Spitzenklasse.

Von softem Spitzen abfangen bis zur harten Limitation ist alles möglich. Dank den LEDs kann man die Kompression gut beobachten und man hat Zugriff auf alle wichtigen Parameter. Selbst das Auto-Make-up Gain ist so eingestellt wie man es selber nicht anders machen würde.

Größte Überraschung hier ist das Gate / Expander die mit 2 Drehreglern sofort eingestellt sind. Release zum Anpassen der Feinheiten ebenso vertreten. Und mit dem Bypass Knopf kann man immer schnell Original und bearbeitetes Signal vergleichen.

Klingt spitze für Vocals (Tipp: Dreht die Ratio ruhig mal hoch und nehmt den Expander hinzu)
Bass: Mit Fast-Attack bekommt ihr auch die ersten Peaks unter Kontrolle sowie mehr Sustain mit längerem Release.

Snare: Als Live- und Studio-Tool mittlerweile unabdinglich, da hier richtig hart eingegriffen werden kann und dank Gate kann man HiHat Übersprechen optimal ausblenden.

In Kombination mit einem Preamp / EQ hat man mit den System 500 Komponenten schnell einen absolut hochwertigen Channelstrip ohne dafür tausende von Euros zu bezahlen.
