after an extensive search in that price range for studio headphones which could complement my monitors, mostly to check the low frequencies, those ones are my big winner!!
VERY consistent sounding in the low and mid frequencies, clear in the high, pretty comfortable, almost no issue with distortion. Don’t freak out too mich with the curve that represents their freq response as exaggerated in the low, they just push the bass and subs to make it earable, nothing boomy as the closed design is actually super well handed (ive read about some holes in the cups to diminish the resonance). So, for studio critical listening the shure srh840a are really nice. The best from all ive tried at that price (sorry sony, ath, senheiser…).
now… when it’s about to take those phones outside of the studio, it’s not as wonderful anymore as their build quality is a bit cheap. i had to sendback to thomann two models that had issues with the headband. Over all they don’t feel solid. So, eventually for some recording / shooting session i could transport them, with great care… but not for casual listening while commuting.
those are studio headphones, pretty flat sounding and pretty fragile. keep them home, in the studio, eventually take them out of the bag for some “on the go” pre-mix, raw edit, but dont bring them in harsh conditions as they are not part of this league.
it’s when used as reference headphones in a very under control context that they shine. And they really do!
