Take your piano and play
The FP-40 stage piano from Roland (shown here in its black finish) features a powerful built-in speaker system and a 256-note polyphony to deliver a clear piano sound with impressive spatial depth as well as a natural decay, resonance, and tonal character that closely resemble those of an acoustic piano. The playing feel is equally authentic thanks to the weighted hammer-action keys with Ivory Feel, touch sensitivity, and escapement (the subtle resistance felt just before a piano key is fully depressed). A total of 305 sounds are available, with 40 stored directly on the FP-40 and additional sounds accessible via the Roland Piano Sphere app, to which the instrument can connect via WiFi. Bluetooth audio and MIDI connectivity are also on board, and in addition to the black version shown here, the Roland FP-40 is also available in white.
WiFi and USB
The two 8 x 12cm speakers with which the Roland FP-40 is equipped each deliver 12 watts of power, and their positioning within the instrument contributes to the richness and spatial depth of its sound. Alongside a built-in metronome, the piano's practice features also include transposition in increments of one semitone as well as Dual, Split, and Twin Piano modes for playing together with a partner. In terms of connectivity, the FP-40 (which tips the scales at 14kg) features a stereo/mono output in dual jack socket format, a USB-C port for audio and MIDI data, a USB-A port for recording, and a mini-jack headphone output, alongside the power supply input and two pedal sockets. Players can further refine the sound using the piano's ambience and brightness effects, with organ sounds available via the rotary speaker settings. The Roland Piano Sphere app, which includes a range of learning features, is available for both iOS and Android devices.
For beginners and gigging players
A pleasing sound is essential when starting out on an instrument, and the Roland FP-40 with its 256-note polyphony does not disappoint, delivering an impressively deep and immersive sound that anyone at the start of their piano journey will enjoy - thanks also to the arrangement of the piano's comparatively powerful 12W speakers. Newbies will appreciate the FP-40's price tag just as much as features like the onboard metronome and headphone output, to say nothing of the fact that the expense of regular tuning and transport, which would have to be budgeted for with an acoustic piano, doesn't even come into it. Performing musicians can enhance their sound with the onboard effects, while the FP-40's manageable 14kg weight means that getting it to the venue will be no sweat, and content creators in turn can enjoy a digital piano that is well suited to livestreaming thanks to its WiFi and Bluetooth options.
About Roland
Roland was founded in 1972 in Osaka, Japan, and has been designing and building electronic musical instruments ever since. During its successful history, Roland has launched many ground-breaking instruments, from legendary drum machines such as the TR-808 and the TR-909 to synthesizer classics like Jupiter-8, SH-101 and the iconic TB-303. Besides synthesizers, Roland's workstations and electric pianos are also very popular. Equally well-known is Roland’s subsidiary Boss, under whose brand name it designs and sells principally guitar pedals and effects units. Under the Roland Professional A/V label, the company additionally develops and distributes professional equipment for virtually every branch of audio and video production – from home studios through to commercial applications.
For the lounge, studio, and stage
At home, the Roland FP-40 is an ideal digital piano for players to learn, practise, and make music whenever the mood takes them, and those who prefer a traditional piano-style sustain pedal can add the optional Roland DP-10. In addition to popular songs, the Roland Piano Sphere app also provides online tuition, as well as personalised playing guidance and feedback, helping users quickly progress from practice sessions to confident performances. The instrument can simply be placed on a table, or paired with the matching Roland KSF-40 wooden stand, though mobile keyboard stands also represent a suitable alternative. For touring musicians, a compatible case and stand are highly recommended in order to keep the instrument stable on stage as well as securely protected during transport between performances.
