Versatile and great sounding
Andrew! 09.01.2023
I don't have the full-size King of Tone to compare this to, but the sound of this pedal is fantastic and can give you quite a large variety of tones, thanks to the mode toggle switch. I really like the small form factor, and the build quality is top notch. One thing I did note is that the output volume of the second mode is quite a lot louder than mode 1 and 3, so you'll need to compensate if you're switching modes (in fairness it is a boost mode!). I use this as a desktop style tweaking pedal with a range of instruments, guitars and synths, and it provides a nice range of crunch and saturation tones.

One of those must have pedals.

Fantastic product with magic inside. It just make your guitar sounds better. That toggle switch let's you fine dial amount of clipping and compression you want. Very musical on any settings and works great with other pedals. I highly recommend it if you are into low gain blues kind of vibe.

T
Incredible & Obtainable King of Tone Sounds
TheBedroomRocker 21.03.2024
The pedal sounds phenomenal in all boost, overdrive, and distortion settings. The overdrive and distortion do not add a lot of gain, but rather changes the character of the clipping (less dynamics, more compression and harmonics). The range of gain is rather limited, but it excels at low-mid gain bluesy and rock territory. The playing dynamics is amazing and makes it a real pleasure to play. It paired up nicely with my single coil, humbucker, and P90 guitars. It's not exactly a bang for your buck, but it's MXR Custom Shop quality and the circuit designed with Analog Mike himself.

Don't fuss around! Set the switch to overdrive and max the gain! Instant Bluesbreaker tone, absolutely wonderful! Great build, small dimensions, worth the price.

Small and great

I have two of these now, they are so good, so I basically have a king of tone with two pedals. I use mainly the overdrive and boost channels and its perfect for Rock guitar. Just enough compression with losing dynamics! Classic rock tone.

M
Top tier transparent overdrive
Maxim_R 10.11.2025
Perfect pedal for stacking! My top use cases for it right now are:
1. Pushing the Tumnus to a heavier overdrive sound
2. Plugging the DS-2 into the DOT to smooth the distortion
3. Boosting whatever drive I have during a solo

Distortion mode only makes sense for me when the KOT is boosted with another low-gain overdrive.

Overall, it's a no-brainer if you're looking for a transparent and versatile low-gain overdrive.
