The complete Bluetooth package

The Mackie CR3.5 BT is in fact a pair of powerful speakers, for an active stereo setup right out of the box. One of the units carries a built‑in Class AB amp with a 50W output, as well as Bluetooth 5.0 compatibility, while the second speaker is a passive box that takes its feed directly from the first. The CR3.5 BTs are part of Mackie's much‑loved CR series of studio monitors, now cruising into their third generation. CR actually stands for Creative Reference, a nod to the devices' blend of reference‑grade playback and creative tone‑tweaking options. In action, the CR3.5 BT set reproduces audio frequencies from 70Hz right up to 20kHz, hitting sound‑pressure levels of 97dB SPL.

Keep them neat and tidy

The sturdy MDF cabinets of the Mackie CR3.5 BT speakers feature rear‑firing bass reflex ports, effectively extending the low‑end. Each speaker combines a 3.5" woven‑fibre woofer with a silk‑dome tweeter that sits safely behind a protective grille. When the speakers are used as nearfield monitors, they can be switched into Desktop mode, a preset which takes the user's listening position into account and delivers a more focused sound that helps keep reflecting soundwaves in check. Bookshelf mode, on the other hand, suits setups where the units are further away from the listener. A switch also allows the left and right channels to be swapped if needed, helping keep the power and audio runs under control: Of course, the passive second speaker hooks up with no fuss at all – just a standard speaker cable connected via spring-clip terminals.

Is there anything they can't do?

With a pair of Mackie CR3.5 BTs, users have a real audio Swiss army knife at their disposal, suitable for content creators, home studio setups, and even owners of project studios who want a very affordable monitoring setup with easy wireless pairing. Thanks to the speakers' compact build – they're each just 14cm wide – the system barely takes up any space, fitting neatly into even the very smallest rooms. Because of that, the CR3.5 BTs are also a good choice for music fans eyeing a stereo setup for everyday living‑room listening. For hooking up consumer audio devices, both RCA sockets and a mini‑jack input are on board. That makes the set a solid option for gamers too, who can run it from a PC or laptop with an adapter. Recording enthusiasts and hi‑fi heads, on the other hand, will appreciate its balanced jack inputs, which add a nice touch of pro‑grade flexibility.

About Mackie

In 1988 Greg Mackie, already a successful co-founder of a pro audio company, founded Mackie Designs Inc. with the goal of producing affordable, high-quality mixers. The company's first official product, the LM-1602 line mixer, was initially produced within the four walls of his home. As sales figures were encouraging, its successor model CR-1604 soon followed - and in 1991 the company finally moved into its first proper production facility. The combination of reliable quality and low prices quickly brought the company enormous success, so that by 1995 Mackie had already sold 100,000 products. In 2003, the company was renamed LOUD Audio, LLC so that there is no longer any confusion between the Mackie brand and its former parent company of the same name.

From the podcast to the party

In home and project studios, the Mackie CR3.5 BTs can be set up as nearfield monitors, ideal for producers mixing their next track or content creators editing their podcasts and vlogs. Equally, the speakers will also pull their weight for day‑to‑day listening duties, even handling the sound at small parties. For quick A/B switches between speaker and headphone output, there's a front-facing 3.5mm socket: And with the volume and tone controls right on the front of the active unit too, it's always easy to dial in the right levels, meaning the speakers can sit pretty much anywhere in the room while staying effortlessly accessible. If deeper bass reproduction is required, the CR3.5 BTs pair perfectly with a subwoofer such as the Mackie CR8S BT, creating an effective 2.1 setup.

Very nice features, good sound, subtle hissing noise still there

5 stars to Thomann fast delivery and fast and efficient support service, despite I don't agree with their repair/replacement veredict.

5 stars to Mackie's support service too, which were quite nice and fast to answer me, and suggested a replacement (which Thomann didn't agree with).

3 stars to the spakers:
- 5 stars to all the features they have, including the possibility to play several inputs at the same time and the Bluetooth working perfectly for me. I only miss a better equalizer sepparated for the bass, as the one wheel they provide is not sufficient to me.
- 4 stars to sound quality, I'm not an expert but it's good for me except of being a bit too bassy for my taste.
- 1 star for the subtle famous hissing noise that is still there even if no input is connected. It's clearly noticeable if you listen at the distance of half meter. Also, the hissing and interference noises from my laptop become quite audible from half way volume up, even using a TRS balanced cable and keeping the input device volume at max. These noise issues were not happening with my 25 year old AIWA SC-A77. For this reason Mackie adviced me to replace them by a new unit, which Thomann support service didn't agree, as mentioned before, but they didn't charge any delivery costs to me, which is fair and great.

In any case I use them for listening to classical music while working, and some pc gaming, so I tend to keep the volume low hence I don't hear the interference noise, and I'm getting used to the background subtle hissing that is always there.
