Powerful stereo PA for the whole band

The LD Systems Maui 28 G3 Mix SysLink Bundle is a stereo column PA made up of two identical active Maui 28 G3 Mix units, each with its own integrated digital mixer. The SysLink functionality allows users to link the two mixers together, doubling the number of input; the Remote mode means every channel of both systems can be controlled from a single unit. The mixers are built into the subwoofers and take care of volume, effects and dynamics, while Bluetooth 5.0 with the AAC codec lets DJs stream audio straight to the system. In total, there are eight XLR-TRS combo sockets: four for microphones, line signals or high-impedance instruments like guitar and bass, and four for line-level signals only. That makes the bundle a great fit for small bands with up to four mic or instrument channels – two vocal mics, guitar and bass, for example – plus two stereo line inputs for keyboard and backing tracks. Solo entertainers and DJs can often get by with fewer inputs – here, the similar Maui 28 G3 Mix Line Bundle pairs one Mix system with a standard one. Either way, no single component weighs more than 23.6kg (about 52lbs), so the set is easy to transport, while the slim white columns barely register visually at weddings, galas and receptions.

LD Systems Maui 28 G3 Mix

Big, punchy sound

Both systems in the Maui 28 G3 Mix SysLink Bundle consist of three components: a subwoofer, a lower column and an upper column. Each subwoofer houses a 12" woofer that reaches right down to 37Hz in its bass reflex cabinet, and the optimised design of the bass reflex ports also reduces flow noise at high levels. Both columns are loaded with drivers: The lower column contains six 3.5" full-range drivers and passes the signal up via multipin connectors to the upper column, which holds a further six 3.5" drivers plus a pair of 1" tweeters. With twelve midrange drivers in total, the work in the mids is shared across plenty of cones – meaning plenty of headroom for vocals and instruments even at higher volumes. Both columns are made of powder-coated aluminium. Their cardioid design works purely acoustically, through the construction of the housing, and attenuates sound to the rear by up to 18dB in the low mids and mids. That means less risk of feedback from open mics on stage and fewer reflections off the back wall.

Even coverage across the room

The tweeters in both column systems of the Maui 28 G3 Mix SysLink Bundle fire into a waveguide whose shape was calculated using the boundary element method (BEM). It spreads the high frequencies evenly across the 120° horizontal dispersion angle, so listeners off to the side hear much the same amount of treble as those standing right in front. That's a real plus in wide rooms where the audience is spread out – at weddings or corporate events, for example. The narrow 30° vertical dispersion and the cardioid attenuation to the rear keep sound away from the ceiling and back wall, which is an advantage for readings, lectures, and quieter styles of music where every word of the lyrics counts. Each system delivers 1,030W RMS (2,060W peak), enough for DJs working bigger dance floors, and for bands with vocals, guitar, bass and keyboard plus unamplified drums playing function rooms or smaller marquees.

Even coverage across the room

For transport, each system in the Maui 28 G3 Mix SysLink Bundle breaks down into its three parts. The subwoofers are the heaviest components, but both come with carrying handles, and their birch plywood cabinets with polyurea coating are built for frequent loading and unloading. Thanks to their powder-coated aluminium housings, the two columns of each system weigh just 12.6kg (under 30lbs) as a pair. Setting up is simply a matter of stacking the parts: the multipin connections carry the signal without any extra cables, and no speaker stands are needed. The two systems are connected via their SysLink interfaces. The subwoofers are just over 50cm tall and the two columns measure 1.54m together, so each assembled system stands just over 2m (around 6ft 9in) – high enough to reach the back rows, even over a standing crowd. Protection circuits against short circuits, DC and overheating keep the electronics safe even during long sessions, such as hours of background music.

About LD Systems

LD Systems originated in Germany and is a brand of the Adam Hall Group. The company’s ambition is to give musicians the freedom they need to effectively express their musical ideas on stage. To achieve this, LD Systems has developed products that include affordable speaker series, wireless microphones, and in-ear monitoring systems. LD Systems attaches great importance to the durability and user-friendliness of its products. Right from the development stage, attention is paid to simple, intuitive, and effective operability. LD Systems also pays great attention to the design of its equipment, so that the technology is not only acoustically but also visually attractive. Accordingly, LD Systems has already been awarded several renowned design prizes.

Effects and DSP for optimum sound

Both systems in the Maui 28 G3 Mix SysLink Bundle use LD Systems' DynX DSP: FIR filters for the crossover and EQ keep the drivers phase-aligned with each other, and a multiband limiter ensures low-distortion reproduction even at high levels. The mixers can be operated via the control panels on the back of the subwoofers or with the Maui app for iOS and Android; in SysLink mode, one system takes over control of the other at the press of the Remote button, so the entire mix can be managed from one unit. Depending on the mode – Easy or Expert – users get a 3-band or 5-band EQ, and in Easy mode, there channel presets for electric bass, vocals, or kick drum, for example, which help speed up the soundcheck. Alongside a compressor and gate for dynamics processing, the mixer offers a delay and a reverb that can be applied to individual channels. The footswitch input also gives musicans hands-free control over the effects – handy for switching off the reverb between songs, for example. 48V phantom power can be activated for the first two channels of each system, so bands can connect up to four condenser mics. Each input can be polarity-inverted, and channels can be given names and colours for a clear overview. The volume of the subwoofer and columns can be set separately – useful for matching the bass level to the room. And with the app, event managers can adjust the mix from out among the audience, where they'll hear exactly what the listeners hear.
