Affordable classic

electric bass Harley Benton JB-20 CA Standard Series

The Harley Benton JB-20 is a four-string bass that is especially interesting for bassists who prefer the look and sound of a classic, but don't want to spend a fortune on it. In terms of design and features, the JB-20 is based on the well-known American model from the 60s and already offers amazing sonic flexibility with two pickups and passive electronics. A simple bass with no battery and no limitations at a price that won't break the bank.

Reduced to the limit

A poplar body, a maple neck, and a laurel fingerboard are the basis of the Harley Benton JB-20. Just like the original, it has a bolt-on neck design, which ensures a sound with plenty of attack. 20 frets offer enough space for basslines of all kinds and the neck itself, which is 38mm wide at the nut and features a C profile, promises an instantly familiar, comfortable playing feel. Two pickups and passive electronics with a volume control for each pickup and a master tone control have always been part of the "JB" signature sound, and the JB-20 is no exception. That's all it takes to make musical history, but it's not only the sound that counts: So do the instrument's looks. The JB-20's design, finish, vintage-style machine heads, and pickguard all contribute to its authentic appearance, and the Candy Apple finish gives it a modern yet understated appearence.

Great sound at an affordable price

The Harley Benton JB-20 is clearly aimed at musicians who are price-conscious but still want to get their hands on the look, feel, and sound of a classic. Stylistically, the JB-20 cannot be squeezed into just one category. In terms of sound, it is at home everywhere - from Pop, Rock, Funk, and Soul to R&B and Jazz - thanks to its two pickups. Beginners looking to find out whether playing the bass is something they enjoy will be particularly pleased with the low price, as will musicians who would like to acquire a decent bass as a second instrument.

Well-equipped for all situations

As already mentioned, the Harley Benton JB-20 offers a wide range of sounds thanks to its two pickups. The bridge pickup delivers punchy mids and the necessary definition for precise fingerstyle lines, while the neck pickup adds the punch and the low end for powerful Rock, Blues, or Soul grooves. Both pickups together offer the typical all-round sound for every possible situation. Thanks to its attractive price, the Harley Benton JB-20 is also perfectly suitable as a second bass. Harley Benton also offers matching bass amplifiers, which are a practical, cost-effective add-on, especially since the bass is also available as a bundle with all the necessary accessories.

JB20 CA Bass.

This bass guitar is an impressively assembled instrument.
The range of authentic Jazz Bass tones are all there for the finding.
It's appearance and quality of finish is also a delight.
The bass handles well and came perfectly set-up.
The minor adjustments made for personal preferences were easily made.
An ideal instrument from beginner through to intermediate use.
And also a go-to bass for all other music making.
Many of Thomann' s customers who have commented on product value for money are correct to do so, and the JB 20 CA bass is certainly no exception.
It joins the JB 20 Sunburst Bass previously purchased, to which Flat Wound Strings are now fitted. This also gives a good performing instrument.
After many years of listening to my eldest son practising bass for his gigs, I picked up an old Westone Thunderer1A bass he had left with me on leaving home. I now spend happy hours, making the same noises he used to, and have my own collection of basses from which to choose.
Thomann' s is always my preference for any items I need to follow my retirement interests..

j
amazing (all things considered!)

we're talking about a cheap bass, right? so let's keep that in mind and not compare it to a high quality one that costs 10 times more.

out of the box, the string action is high and the bass isn't really pleasant to play, but if you take time to watch a few videos on youtube to learn how to adjust it, then you can get it alright. it'll be difficult to get the best string action + no fret buzz + a perfect intonation, but you can definitely get something that works and makes the bass a nice instrument to play.

i wish there was a little more effort put into the electronics because when you play with a bit of overdrive (or fuzz!) and don't touch the metal parts of the instrument (the strings or bridge typically), it will hum quite clearly, and i would have definitely paid 10 bucks more to get slightly better components that would fix that...

other than that, it's great, not too heavy, the neck is really good (again, let's not compare to a fancy instrument) and the sound is alright. some people say that changing the strings would improve that point, i haven't tried yet but it would make sense.

anyways, if you are looking for a bass as a secondary instrument just to record a few stuff or play occasionally and don't want to spend too much on it, go for it! just, don't be afraid to adjust it so you can make it right to play... you go slowly and it'll all be fine!
if bass is your main instrument and you want one that will follow you for years, i'd recommend to go with something more serious.

A jazz bass on a diet
Jon 326 20.10.2025
Many years ago I had a candy apple red Tokai Jazz Bass and sold it to buy my JayDee in 1986. Although I'll never regret buying my beloved JayDee (still in my possession), I do bitterly regret selling the Tokai.

So, when I had a little birthday cash in.my account I decided to get nostalgic and bought this...

The colour is a bit more pinkish than candy apple but it looks great, and played very nicely out of the (well packaged) box.

As with all jazz basses, its a simple set up and not the loudest of basses but that is standard even on Fender ones.

The tonal range is far better than the price point would suggest and the pickups are perfectly adequate under most conditions.

My only slight disappointment was that the fretboard ends were pretty poorly finished and rather sharp but when compared to the overall quality of the bass, thats a fairly small gripe and fixable by most people with a little patience and household tools.

It's noticeable how light it is but sustain doesn't suffer too much (and what bass player actually needs sustain anyway?). I have a Marcus Miller J Bass which is significantly weightier and the basic tone is largely comparable.

It would be a great little gig bass for pubs and clubs that you could happily play all night, without any issues, and not feel like you've just got back from the gym after.

If the colour had been a few shades more scarlet...I would have been completely satisfied and my nostalgic need fulfilled.

But for the price...there is honestly nothing that can be complained about
