A remarkably refined five-string

Five-string electric bass Harley Benton BZ-5000 II NT

Harley Benton's Deluxe Series is known for exceptional instruments with top-notch features at an attractive price. The latest version of the Harley Benton BZ-5000 NT five-string is no exception. One standout detail is its five-piece neck-through design, with a full 34" scale length. This construction guarantees a clear, articulate tone and remarkable sustain. Add to that the unique Harley Benton design, combined with some truly premium tonewoods and a full complement of high-quality hardware – including the graphite nut, die-cast tuners, and monorail bridge – that simply speaks for itself. At the heart of the BZ-5000 II NT's versatile sound are two soapbar humbuckers, and active electronics featuring a Tesla 3-band EQ. All in all, the Harley Benton BZ-5000 II delivers a package that brings together features and design elements usually found in much higher price ranges.

Exquisite ingredients

Mahogany and ash form the foundation of the Harley Benton BZ-5000 II's body, which is topped off with a truly spectacular AAA-grade flamed maple top. The transparent high-gloss natural finish is exactly the right choice here to bring out the grain. Maximum stability comes from the neck-through construction, made of five individual strips of maple and nyatoh. Completing the package is a rosewood fingerboard with 24 frets. Two Tesla TV-SBL1-5 humbuckers and active Tesla electronics with a 3-band EQ (bass, mids, treble) offer a wealth of tonal options. For those who prefer a more traditional approach, the BZ-5000 II can be switched to passive mode with the push/pull function of the volume dial. The black Sung-II-BB-105 bridge features five independent saddles; this lightweight 'monorail' design ensures the optimal transfer of each individual string's vibrations.

A high-end bass at a low price

So who's the Harley Benton BZ-5000 II for? First and foremost, bassists who're looking for something special, a bit off the beaten track – but that won't break the bank. For players who aren't stuck in a vintage mindset and definitely don't want yet another copy of a classic. Ultimately, for anyone who wants to broaden their musical horizons with a genuinely unusual instrument. All that being said, the price also makes the BZ-5000 II a solid choice as a second or third bass. A five-string, of course, is aimed at anyone wanting an extended range with that low B string (or alternatively a high C, depending on the tuning): As such, this bass really comes into its own in modern styles. Jazz, Fusion, contemporary R&B and Gospel, Funk and more – these are just some of the genres where the Harley Benton BZ-5000 II feels right at home.

In addition to an extensive range of stringed instruments, Thomann's house brand also offers a wide choice of amplifiers, speakers, effect pedals, and other accessories. In total, the range includes over 1,500 products. Built by established names in the industry, all Harley Benton products combine quality and reliability at attractive and affordable prices. The continuous expansion of the range ensures that Harley Benton always provides new, exciting, and innovative products that keep players perfectly in tune with the musical world, day after day.

Expand your sound and your bass will follow

Of course, instruments like the Harley Benton BZ-5000 II can easily handle a bassist's bread-and-butter duties in almost any band. But even at first glance, it's clear that the BZ-5000 is built for much more. This bass is designed to step into the spotlight with punchy basslines, solos, chord work, and even full solo arrangements. All perfectly complemented by Harley Benton's own effects pedals, of course: The Classic Chorus, for example, adds lush, atmospheric textures that really make natural harmonics shine. Or push that sound even further with the Classic Flanger, for almost psychedelic tones. Add spatial depth to solo arrangements with a reverb effect such as the Harley Benton Duality. And to keep the BZ-5000's immense dynamic range under control, the Custom Line Compressor is the ideal partner.

Amazing bass, with QC issues
H-forever 27.03.2024
This bass is incredible! It is LOADED with features, and sounds incredible. The build quality is fantastic. It feels amazing, and looks incredibly beautiful.

The was only one very disappointing problem with it - as soon as I rotated the high frequency knob up to increase the treble, I mean like only 5%, I immediately started hearing an extremely loud high pitch hissing noise. I tried all the other knobs and they work great, and do not produce any noises, but the treble knob introduced very powerful ear-piercing hissing sounds, and thus the bass was basically unusable. In order to use the bass, I had to always keep the treble knob all the way down. I tried changing cables, plugging the bass directly into the amp, changing pickup modes, but the extreme hissing sounds just wouldn't disappear. This issue was present no matter what I tried. Only with the treble all the way down the bass would not create loud high pitch noises. That's sad because it basically means that the bass is faulty, and the EQ is not working.

I had to return it, but I'll order another one and give it one more chance because other than this terrible fault the bass is amazing! I hope I was just unlucky once, and got that one out of a hundred faulty unit.

I will update my review after getting the second bass and checking, if the other one has the same fault, or not.

Kt
A very nice playable bass
Koki, the basist-wannabe from Zagreb 09.11.2025
When the bass was delivered, I was so hyped. When I first plugged it in a small bass amplifier, there was a lot of buzz with the input jack, but was kind of playable. After less than 2 weeks, the push-pull knob died and was not working in the passive mode. I don't much like active instruments, so I was playing only the passive mode until that point. Now I basically have an active bass. It is very playable. I have it set up in D standard. The bass holds the tune extremely well, and is massive in weight, as a bass should be. I feel great when playing it and I like that it has a lot of tone options, although I have all set to middle. Another minor issue is that the spacing between the 1st and 2nd string is slightly bigger than between other strings. This doesn't affect playability, but then again, I am a beginner bass player, so it might be an issue when playing more demanding stuff. All in all, the bass is very good, and if it didn't have all these issues, definitely I would give it al A+, but it is slightly disappointing and it is not the first time I had similar issues with mid-priced instruments from Thomann.

t
Great 5 string bass for price
totalmassretain 01.06.2026
First 5 string bass purchase, never going back to 4 string ever again.

The look and feel of this bass is really superb. Feels awesome to play and the finish is beautiful.

Required a little playing around with the truss rod and action out of the box, but its easy enough and didn't take too long to get right for me. Comes with all the Allen keys you'll need to adjust these things, but to access the truss rod you'll need a phillips head 1 screwdriver.

Not sure if its a problem is just with my bass, but the EQ control knobs don't really seem to make a significant difference to my ear. Not really a problem for me, I'm not the type to use them, but might be worth bearing in mind if you like the options.

In conclusion, great premium feeling 5 string, if you are new to 5 strings I'd go with this one
