Active acoustic adjustment

The Genelec 8050 BWM is an active two-way studio monitor that delivers the first-class sound producers the world over have come to expect from the Finnish manufacturer. With its signature stylish housing in lightweight die-cast aluminium, this model features two separate amplifiers with a total output of 270W, driving the 8" woofer and 1" tweeter to deliver sound pressure levels of up to 120dB SPL per stereo pair. In addition to its automatic start function, this speaker also allows the frequency response to be adjusted to the room's acoustic conditions. A balanced XLR input means signals can be fed in without interference, while a protective circuit prevents driver damage by intercepting short-term level peaks. Magnetic shielding is also included as standard.

Impressive range of features

With a frequency range from 38Hz to 20kHz, the Genelec 8050 BWM delivers impressive low-end performance for a compact monitor. To achieve this, the speaker uses bass reflex technology, which maximises low-frequency sound pressure and extends the driver transmission range. To allow the output to be adjusted to room conditions, both the bass and treble levels can be reduced in four different dB steps – or the bass can be rolled off completely. When the monitor is placed on a reflective surface, activating the Desktop Control function helps prevent frequencies between 160 and 200Hz from becoming overly pronounced. The (deactivatable) automatic start function detects whether a signal is present and automatically switches the amplifier unit on as required. This makes the speaker easy to operate and helps save electricity.

For the discerning listener

Anyone looking for a monitor speaker with a flat frequency response and a spacious, three-dimensional sound will not be disappointed by the Genelec 8050 BWM. As this device doesn't include a volume control, it's best suited for studio setups where the listening level is adjusted via an external monitor controller. If playback remains consistently too loud or too quiet, the speaker's sensitivity can be adjusted using a small rotary control. For recording and mixing professionals who rely on consistently high-quality sound, the 8050 is an excellent choice, with its housing materials and shape also contributing hugely to the overall sound audio image – they minimise resonance and ensure optimal sound dispersion in multi-speaker setups.

About Genelec

Genelec was founded in 1976 by Ilpo Martikainen. It grew from a family business into one of the world’s leading manufacturers of professional studio and broadcasting loudspeakers. To this day, Genelec’s loudspeakers are manufactured exclusively in Finland. Genelec offers performance-oriented, neutral-sounding loudspeakers and subwoofer systems for audio professionals and sound enthusiasts, and a combination of innovative technology and design ensures that the range of products is continuously improving. The company is committed to sustainable development and environmental awareness. In 2018, Genelec was awarded the Pro Sound “Company of the Year” award. Genelec speakers are favourites of such recording industry veterans as Obie O'Brien, Michael Carnes, and David Reitzas, as well as of producers like Hardwell, Keith Ross, and Vini Vici.

Ideal for stereo and surround setups

Whether in a professional studio, home setup, or project studio, the Genelec 8050 BWM delivers outstanding results thanks to its flat frequency response and room-adaptation features. It can be used not only as part of a stereo set, but also as a component in a surround setup. Genelec offers a suitable subwoofer for this purpose – the Genelec 7050CPM. When used on resonant surfaces such as a desk or stand, the integrated IsoPod comes into play, decoupling the speaker from its support surface using a combination of rubber feet and connecting bars. Multiple threaded inserts at the rear of the housing provide secure mounting. Genelec also supplies suitable mounting accessories, such as the Genelec 24499 Truss Mount Kit.

Der perfekte Studio-Monitor
Allrounda Beats 16.09.2020

Absolute Kaufempfehlung!

Hifi and power!
lmfmis 11.02.2019
I bought this pair for my tripleduty use: PA/Hifi/Studio. I amplify instruments and use 8050 as my voice PA. On freetime main duty is HiFI and hometheater.

Design and usability:
Rounded design is great. Makes the look much less bulky. The size is bigger than I could estimate from pictures.

Setting the dipswitches is pain in the neck, as the dip switches lie so deep in the back You have to tilt whole speaker down to get visual. Easy to scratch the front like this. The bass port doubles as surprise handle.

HiFi:
The 8050 is really respectable HiFi speaker. The larger tweeter and waveguide make BIG difference when compared with the 8040. The difference in directivity is not subtle.. 8050 has so much better directivity. Soundstage is clear with depth and detail. In comparison 8040 is like listening behind a curtain.

SPL:
The 8050 has more than enough SPL for my 15m2 unthreated room. I could not light the limiter up. These babies are LOUD! With the little bother 8040 the SPL limit was way too close - no such problem here.

Frequency Range:
Lower range is listed at 35Hz, but 40Hz is closer to truth, Definately needs subwoofer for all material. Lower frequencies compress when played louder. Only 8 inch woofer here.

Extra;
Nice that the speaker has automatic power off.

Wishes:
I only wish the LED would be white as in G5.

Verdict:
These speakers can live up to my tripleduty really well. Before purchasing the 8050 I tried out the 8040 pair: no competition there.
