A pedal that just "screams" versatility

The number of "screamer"-style pedals on the market today is virtually endless, as are the technical variations that have been made to the design. In the midst of these, however, EarthQuaker Devices' Plumes Small Signal Shredder represents a unique interpretation that brings way more to the table than just the signature "mid-hump". The Plumes' top panel retains the familiar three-knob layout of the original from which it takes its cues, but adds a mini-toggle switch offering three distinct clipping modes: A crunchy, compressed drive with a distinctly British character, a dynamic clean boost, and a more transparent, mid-rich overdrive reminiscent of the original Screamer circuit. With its improved low-noise circuitry, increased dynamic range and headroom, and refined tone control, the Plumes offers a significantly more versatile take on the green legend.

EarthQuaker Devices Plumes Signal Shredder

It's all in the clipping

The EarthQuaker Devices Plumes Small Signal Shredder's greatest asset is its trio of clipping options. In the first position, the pedal uses symmetrical LED clipping to deliver its crunchiest, most compressed sound, reminiscent of a classic British valve amp – ideal for adding bite to clean tones or pushing already overdriven amps into heavier territory. Setting the switch to its middle position bypasses the clipping diodes to produce an open, dynamic-sounding boost that enhances the sonic character of the amp without dramatically colouring the signal. Finally, the third position uses asymmetrical silicon diode clipping for a warmer, more transparent Screamer-style overdrive, making the Plumes an excellent standalone gain pedal. The redesigned Tone control offers full, defined lows and cutting highs without sacrificing the characteristic midrange presence.

Get those green vibes

Guitarists who enjoy the classic "screamer" mid-boost – but also want to have extra options at their fingertips without having to load up on additional pedals – should definitely take a closer look at the EarthQuaker Devices Plumes Small Signal Shredder. It packs a solo boost, a way to tighten up high-gain amps, and a characterful mid-rich overdrive for amplifiers that serve as pedal platforms into a single compact unit. The Plumes also works well with a wide range of different pickups, allowing players of everything from Texas Blues to Death Metal to sculpt their ideal tone. Guitarists who want to take the classic sound of those legendary green OD pedals and explore the "what ifs" that the original circuit leaves open will definitely enjoy the Plumes Small Signal Shredder.

About EarthQuaker Devices

EarthQuaker Devices was founded in 2004 by the musician Jamie Stillman, who had previously gathered years of experience in the world of music and sounds as the manager of a record label for Metal, Punk, and Shoegaze bands. Today, his innovative pedal designs are among the most in-demand and desirable devices in the boutique segment, attracting interest from a huge community of musicians. Stillman is now in charge of a sizeable team of developers and technicians, who are continuously working from their base in Akron, Ohio to expand their catalogue of hand-made effects pedals. EarthQuaker Devices are used by renowned artists like Paul Simon, Coldplay, Tom Bukovac, Idles, and The Black Keys.

The small details add up

The thing that sets the EarthQuaker Devices Plumes Small Signal Shredder apart from other low-gain overdrives (apart from its sonic architecture) is its technical design: The footswitch operates noiselessly thanks to its relay-based Flexi-Switch technology, eliminating the pops and clicks to which vintage pedals are typically susceptible - an obvious bonus when recording, since no noises have to be edited out after the fact. Momentary switching is also possible, activating the effect for as long as the switch is held down and bypassing it again when released. And because the switch is true bypass, the pedal leaves the signal unaffected when switched off. What's more, the Plumes requires just 9V at 25mA, making it compatible with virtually any conventional pedalboard power supply.

Not a Signal Shredder, in a good way
Bluesrockguy 09.07.2021
The name makes it sound like it will be extreme… the green color makes it seem like another TS clone or derivative. It isn’t really either. I find this to be a hugely versatile boost/od/distortion. The second position gives a full open sound while 1 and 3 give different levels of compression and slightly different behavior to the tone knob. I was able to match tones w my Tumnus. And stacked with another boost, it makes a nice harmonic distortion or fuzz. This knocked the Wampler Pantheon and Rats Bane off my board. Realty great pedal. 3 knobs means a simple guy like me can remember how to get the sounds he likes, as he cycles through different options.

Great pedal for a great price
Guildner 24.02.2020
This is one of the better ones out there. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a tube screamer type of pedal overdrive/distortion. It's cheap and sounds awesome. There is a noticable jump in volume when using the little switch and setting it in the middle position, but that it not something you would do while playing anyway. Highly recommended. I use it on guitar and bass. Bought it for my bass pedalboard but I am finding it hard to not plug my guitar into it when playing guitar.

Best Overdrive ever
Nuaj 05.09.2025
I owned an old TS808 modified by Keeley Electronics and it was very very cool, but these people from Earthquaker Devices just blowed up my mind.

The three modes are an amazing improvement, and the EQ knob has a very equlibrated calibration, never sound hiss if you turn it all the way up. The sound is amazing, from subtle saturation to enhance your clean sounds ( 2 mode) to fat and nasty. If you set your amp or preamp a little bit dirty it becomes a very rude boy.

Love it!!!

Nice low/mid gain overdrive
Baturay 15.03.2024
I use this overdrive mostly for low/mid gain rhythms. I love it. It sounds full and alive with tube amps. There are 3 mods but my favorite is the 3rd one. EQ has a great room, and this pedal is loud. You can get noise from it after the volume turned to half with high gains, but it is normal with this pedal.

Just a remark, when you change the mod from mod 1 or 2 to mod 3, volume drops, I checked it and is not a defect. It is coming from product itself. But changing mods in the middle of the song is not a thing you would do in live situation, so it is fine.

I saw some comparisons with TS9 but I think two pedals are very different. I have used them both. They are both great and I can't say one of them is better, but for my personal taste, I liked Plumes more :)
