The Magnificent Seven
Ideal for use both in the studio and on stage, the DP7 from Audix is a comprehensive selection of professional microphones for a standard drum kit, all manufactured in the USA. The set is composed of seven mics – for kick drum, snare, two rack toms, a floor tom, and a pair of overheads. The first five are dynamic microphones, each with Audix's own VLM diaphragm: They handle the close miking of the shells, delivering a clear, detailed picture of fast transients. Alongside them, two small‑diaphragm condenser microphones capture the cymbals and the room's acoustics. The entire microphone set fits neatly in the sturdy aluminium case, which also contains all the clamps and clips needed for mounting. The microphones, too, boast very sturdy all-metal housings, and have clearly been built to withstand the realities of touring; still, they're also capable of real versatility in the studio. Together, these qualities position the Audix DP7 as a tool for ambitious drummers and sound engineers with high standards.
Aggressive yet balanced
The microphones in Audix's DP7 set are designed to work together as a coherent whole. The overall sound is modern, with a clear focus on aggressive playing styles such as Rock and Metal. That intent comes through in the way the dynamic mics can handle very high SPL levels and, in some cases, use strongly tailored frequency responses. This is most obvious with the D6 on kick drum, which delivers real low‑end punch alongside plenty of upper‑range attack. The same also applies to the D2 and D4 tom mics, which are easy to position around the kit despite their size, thanks to the set's gooseneck rim clamps. On snare, the i5 takes a more classic approach, sounding a little fuller and less harsh than, for example, an SM57. Rounding out the set, the pair of ADX 51 overheads add a sense of lightness to the otherwise tightly focused close‑mic sound, helping to create a more balanced overall picture.
Hard-working harmony
Drummers who want a particularly direct, modern sound for both live work and studio recording (and who value microphones that can both work well together and still handle plenty of volume) will feel well served by the Audix DP7 drum package. This a microphone set that doesn't require excessive spending, yet still provides a very solid foundation for more ambitious recordings – with no need to upgrade again too quickly. That's also underpinned by the sheer range of ways the microphones can be used. They're not just suited to recording drums; the DP7 set also works well as a starter kit for putting together a home‑studio mic collection, or as a practical all-round addition to an existing setup. Anyone taking recording seriously, then, should find plenty to appreciate in the DP7 over the long term.
About Audix
Audix is a US microphone manufacturer which was founded in 1984. The small company has its headquarters in Wilsonville, Oregon and offers a wide selection of microphones – both for the recording studio and for live use. The range of products extends from instrument microphones, such as those from the well-known D series, to vocal microphones with complete wireless systems. The company's remit goes beyond the music industry, however, since it also provides lavalier microphones, console microphones, and other devices for permanent installation. Audix also produces headphones and various microphone accessories, such as stands and XLR cables.
On their own or in concert
The microphones in the DP7 drum case work perfectly together as a complete system, for drums or other ensemble setups. Equally, each one is effective in its own right, with a broad range of uses. That flexibility makes the set well suited to all kinds of applications, both on stage and in the studio. In live situations, the small, lightweight microphones are easy to mount on drum shells and the like, with the clamps included here helping keeping them neatly out of the way of even the most energetic musicians. On top of that, the dynamic microphones' low sensitivity makes them resistant to feedback, helping them deliver a clear, focused signal on loud stages. In the studio, the Audix i5 and D2 also make excellent alternatives for miking guitar cabinets, alongside their drum duties. Much the same applies to the D6 and D4 on bass amps. The ADX 51, meanwhile, is particularly well suited to acoustic instruments where a bright, detailed sound is required.
