Professional plug-and-play punch
The Audix D6 kick‑drum microphone has long been the first choice for many drummers and sound engineers when they're aiming for a modern kick-drum sound with plenty of low‑end punch and attack. What they like is the D6's heavily contoured frequency response, which delivers a sound straight out of the box that other bass drum mics often only achieve after some fairly involved EQ work. Thanks to Audix's own VLM diaphragm, the transient response remains natural and well defined, too. All this makes the D6 is extremely easy to work with – it's fair to described it as a professional plug‑and‑play microphone. Its smaller dimensions also make it easy to position in front of or even inside a bass drum, which is exactly what the lightweight tripod in this bundle is designed for. But it's not just its simplicity and compact size that lets it shine both live and in studio situations: The D6's robust aluminium housing – made in the Audix facility in Oregon like the rest of the D series – and high resistance to both sound pressure levels and feedback are equally important.
Solid straight out of the box
For a dynamic large‑diaphragm microphone, the Audix D6 seems surprisingly compact. However, it delivers a really rich, powerful sound, extending right down into the sub‑bass range. More specifically, it offers a frequency response from 30Hz to 15kHz: Within that range, the response features plenty of low end, a pronounced mid‑range dip around 700Hz, and a boost between 5 and 12kHz. This results in a transparent signal that cuts clean through the mix, without any of the boxy midrange often associated with kick-drum miking. The D6 doesn't overdo it with its heavily contoured frequency response, though, so engineers can EQ where needed: The tripod included here is also height-adjustable, allowing them to fine-tune the sound physically too. Wherever it's placed, the Audix D6 can cope with sound pressure levels well above 144dB without distortion, even for aggressive playing styles.
Refreshingly uncomplicated
In many cases, the Audix D6 delivers exactly the kick‑drum sound the track requires straight away. That typically means lots of low end, paired with a noticeable dip in the midrange and a touch of assertive attack on top – all of it coming across with great clarity. As a result, there's little need for time‑consuming post‑processing, whether in the studio or in live situations. The compact mic stand included here speeds up setup to: After all, time is always tight on stage! Any sound engineers looking for a refreshingly uncomplicated microphone that provides a usable signal right from the outset are likely to feel right at home with the D6. The same recommendation also extends to drummers and other creatives in the worlds of Pop, Rock and Metal who are after a professional bass drum microphone for recording or live sound, and who favour exactly this kind of punchy, modern kick character.
About Audix
Audix is a US microphone manufacturer which was founded in 1984. The small company has its headquarters in Wilsonville, Oregon and offers a wide selection of microphones – both for the recording studio and for live use. The range of products extends from instrument microphones, such as those from the well-known D series, to vocal microphones with complete wireless systems. The company's remit goes beyond the music industry, however, since it also provides lavalier microphones, console microphones, and other devices for permanent installation. Audix also produces headphones and various microphone accessories, such as stands and XLR cables.
Keep it clear when it gets loud
On kick drum, the Audix D6 delivers exactly the sound many modern productions call for, more or less out of the box. It's little surprise, then, that it's often a first choice in the studio when recording drums. That being said, thanks to its extended low‑frequency response, it's not limited to kick drum duties alone, and can also produce convincing results on floor toms, bass guitar amps, or even Leslie speakers. When used live on stage, the features of the D6 that most stand out are not only its compact, rugged housing but also its low output level, which helps keep even very high sound pressure levels under control. Combined with its cardioid pickup pattern and a sensitivity of 0.8 mV/Pa, this results in excellent resistance to feedback. Long cable runs and interference aren't an issue either, thanks to its transformerless circuitry and low‑impedance, balanced output. Clear, reliable signals on loud stages are very much a given with the Audix D6.
