Pick up the bass

The Artec SE-2A is a very affordable way of turning any three-knob bass guitar into an active bass guitar. Many more inexpensive basses tend to come factory-fitted with passive circuitry. Now, for a very modest outlay and a bit of DIY handiwork, the Artec 2‑band system can massively expand the tonal range of these instruments. As well as letting bassists fine-tune their pickups' volume and balance, it provides dedicated controls for bass and treble. These two controls make it easy to shape the sound to suit different styles, playing techniques, and personal preferences. Power comes from a single 9V battery, which typically lasts for several hundred hours of playing. One particularly appealing aspect of the Artec 2‑band system is its price – low enough that upgrading any bass to active electronics doesn't feel like a risk.

Upgrade that passive bass

The Artec 2‑band bass guitar electronics set is pre-wired out of the box. All that musicians themselves need to do is to connect up the SE-2 to their instrument's pickups and output jack. The three potentiometers have the following functions: volume, balance, and bass and treble stacked on one dual knob. This is ideal for passive J-style basses in particular, or any bass with only three controls. Thanks to SMT (Surface-Mount Technology), the circuit board is very compact. In practice, this means it fits into almost any control cavity without the need for additional routing. The bass control operates at 100Hz (±12 dB), while the treble control is set at 4kHz (±12 dB), giving bass players considerable flexibility in shaping their own sound. Another major advantage of active electronics is their capacity to transform the pick-ups' high‑impedance signal into a low‑impedance signal. This ensures that there's no noticeable loss of audio quality, even when using longer cables.

For active bassists

A 2‑band active system like the Artec SE-2A gives musicians a broader palette of sounds than a purely passive bass, simply by offering bass and treble controls. Being able to shape the tone directly on the instrument is, in itself, a practical and appealing option. On top of that, active electronics prevent the signal loss already mentioned over longer cable runs. Combining all these advantages, the Artec 2‑band system provides a very cost‑effective way to "activate" a passive bass. It's also an accessible and affordable choice for hobbyists who enjoy building instruments themselves – whether from a DIY kit or from an individual selection of parts.

About Artec

Artec Sound is a Korean company that has dedicated itself fully to the field of guitar and bass equipment with a mission to offer high-quality yet affordable products for modern musicians. These include various pickups and preamps for acoustic guitars, pickups for electric guitar, and active electronics for electric bass guitars. Amplifiers are also part of Artec’s product range, of course, from simple practice combos through to full all-tube stacks. The company focuses particularly on effects, however, and offers an impressive selection of different series that encompass over 60 different pedals.

More flexibility

So how does having a bass guitar equipped with an Artec SE-2A active electronics set actually change a bassist's day‑to‑day playing? The bass control is set relatively high, at 100Hz, which gives plenty of punch and a strong low end that sits just above the bass drum's frequency range. This tends to work well across a wide range of musical styles and mixes: Slap grooves, in particular, really come to life with a boost in the bass range. Paired with an increase in treble, this delivers that familiar, authentic slap sound. Meanwhile, the 4kHz treble control highlights the attack of each note – whether played with fingers or a pick – while also adding the bite and edge needed for modern Rock and Metal tones.

Preamp good but watch the wiring
Woodinblack 17.01.2018
I fitted this on a previously passive Iceman bass. The shafts of the pots aren't long, so I had to do a bit of woodwork and the width of the dual concentric tone control is bigger than a normal tone knob, so the hole needed to be rewired. They give you a good amount of cable to position the battery.

I had a problem in that after grounding the bass, it no longer made any noise and found out that the wires that went from the balance output to the tone input were reversed which was shorting out the board. Taking the pins out of the plug and putting them in correctly (as the silk screen on the board shows) fixes the problem. Also note that there are no instructions with these preamps, although instructions are on artecs website. Everything is wired (even if incorrectly) apart from battery +/- and jack out/ground/switch solder terminals on the board.

Apart from the wiring issue, which is why I marked quality down, the actual quality of the preamp is fine, I can hear no difference with it in or out of the circuit with the tone controls flat, as it should be, and the tone controls provide a useful range of options.

Good upgrade!
Cesar593 13.10.2017
This is a noise free, reliable and very well built active preamp for bass guitar! I have used it to replace a noisy preamp in an older bass, and I am very satisfied! Not only did the noise disapear, but it now sounds louder and deeper. Don't be fooled by the price, this is a great preamp! Best for the buck out there, no doubt about it!

Transparent when you work out why it's flawed
Sethguitarman 10.12.2022
So initially I thought this preamp sucked the tone massively from my musicman style pickup, making it quite boxy / dead. Then I realised that at centre detent the EQ is actually sucking half the bass and treble out of the mix. When both hi/low are at 100% my pickup was back to sounding as it should (with a nice quiet transparent boost). So really you need to leave it at 100% and the roll back the bass for a treble boost, and roll back the treble for a low pass. A proper designed preamp should be effectively bypassed at the middle position, this is not. hence the three stars.

However when you know this it can be used quite effectively, if you're good at soldering the stacked potentiometer can be replaced with two seperate hi & low pots. The volume control is very smooth and linear which is great.

splendid piece of kit.
this brings a bit more life into the old axe, it does however highlight any earth issues and pick up wiring conflicts.
my aria p2 has a single and hum bucker, they had to be wired in reverse of there original wiring which brought to my attention earthing problems....simple, need new pickups. bummer.
enhances the basses top mid and bass with a real difference.
the blend button is a bit harsh and doesn't really give a lot of range and it wont work full stop without a battery... keep a spare at hand.
real easy to fit and im sure once you got through the positioning and wiring you'll be reasonably impressed. I am.
