Based on the classic AKG C414

Since its release in 1971, the AKG C414 has become an indispensable piece of equipment in recording studios and on the world's biggest stages. In response to this success, AKG developed the C214, a 1" large-diaphragm microphone conceived as an affordable alternative to the renowned C414. With a capsule that combines the legendary dual-capsule system of the C414 with AKG's back-plate technology, the C214 convincingly emulates the sonic character of its bigger brother. This stereo set includes two microphones for full stereo recordings, as well as pair of elasticated shock mounts, two matching windscreens and stand adapters, and a robust metal case.

High performance

The AKG C214 is a versatile condenser microphone based on the pressure gradient principle, allowing it to capture sound based on the difference in air pressure between two sides of its diaphragm. Its wide dynamic range of 143dB ensures a lifelike representation of transients, and the edge-terminated diaphragm delivers a neutral sound with well-resolved mids and excellent treble presence, so that even the finest nuances of an instrument or voice are captured. Additionally, the switchable low-cut filter (160Hz) together with the integrated capsule suspension effectively reduces mechanical noise in recordings. As a condenser microphone, the C214 requires a phantom power supply via a three-pin XLR connector.

Great sound at an affordable price

The AKG C214 is a professional large-diaphragm condenser microphone that has all the bases covered: A bright, clear sound, high-quality materials, and outstanding workmanship. Thanks to its excellent price-performance ratio, the C214 is by no means reserved exclusively for professional studio use, either: Musicians, vocalists, and home studio producers will also find the C214 an excellent microphone that is well suited to both a variety of instruments and a wide range of vocal styles.

About AKG

AKG was founded in Vienna, in 1947, by Dr. Rudolf Goerike and Ernst Pless. After only a few months, the first AKG microphones were already being used for the first time in radio stations and theatres. AKG's big breakthrough occurred during the early 1950s, with some very sophisticated innovations that were unique in their field. One example is the D12, the first large-diaphragm condenser microphone with remote-controlled, switchable polar patterns – the first client to acquire them was the BBC in London. AKG is today a world-renowned brand in many different fields. With countless high-class products in its range, such as the well-known C414, the name AKG has always been synonymous with quality and outstanding sound.

Very loud or very quiet?

A pair of AKG C214s makes truly excellent stereo recordings a reality, both in the studio and in live settings. The C214 has robust metal housing and dual-sided mesh grille, helping protect the internal electronics and capsule from damage, as well as reducing HF interference. Users can thus deploy the C214 stereo set with complete confidence in a variety of acoustic environments. Whether the order of the day is dynamic ensembles, loud guitar amps, or the delicate attack of an acoustic guitar, thanks to its maximum sound pressure level (SPL) of 156dB and outstanding dynamic range of 143dB, the C214 will handle both loud and quiet signals equally well.

An excellent pair for drum overheads
Alex Dascal 21.05.2020
I've been using these as my no-comment go-to for drum overheads. Compared to other microphones I've tested they are the most pleasant when it comes to capturing overhead.

I'm currently using them in a spaced setup balanced full R-L Stereo. They provide a very warm sound and it generally tones cymbals down a little bit. The sound is a little "creamier" with these two compared to a small diaphragm pair (Rode NT-5 MP) -- the small diaphragms are a bit more pingy and metal-sounding.

I usually keep my preamp gain at around 10/11 o'clock with these while suspended half a meter above the cymbals and it pours a really powerful signal through -- the gain on these microphones is very good.

The price for these feels like a bargain as they yield very good results sonically and you get a case, spider suspensions, wind shields, stand adapters and regular holders. The carrying case itself is pretty neat and feels well-built and sturdy.

It's a very good alternative to it's bigger brother C414 and for half the price you get a very close quality and sound profile. The C414 are indeed a little bit better but for general purpose recording applications you are in a very good spot with a pair of C214s.

TL;DR -- If you are looking for a pair of large diaphragm mikes that feel and sound premium but are on a budget -- this is the BEST option.

Paired microphones, quality workmanship, very nice and warm sound. Usable for a wide range of uses, from vocal recording to instrument recording. The microphone offers significantly more than its price.

Nice with the odd bump
MuddyNick 19.10.2020
Great sounding mic's, very clean and natural. Perfect for vocals and make pretty decent drum overheads as well however, I have found it to sometimes be a little off in the low end when tried it on a baby grand and a guitar. Otherwise, it's been a fantastic mic and it now comes out regularly on live sets.

Great mics

We use these for overheads on the drums and no longer need individual mics on each tom.

These are great sounding mics, just as everyone has already said.
