Exotic, gong-like, but does it work in music?
My first impression after the first hit was WOW! Nice stick definition, just enough wash and a gong-like, trashy crash. However, this quickly proved to be the downside of this cymbal. I use small tubular bells in my drumkit and when I started to play my rhythms which incorporate this melodic percussive instrument I was shocked. The ride clashed with the clear notes of the bells in a very unpleasant way. It has a strong undertone, which sits somewhere at the note D. This is ok, and it didn't bother me as my kick and snare are tuned to D and G. But, the overtones are all over the place, much like in a gong. I tried all sorts of muffling, sizzle chain, etc, but couldn't get it to work within melodic music. I thought I found the perfect ride for my needs, but no. It's going back.

Dual Purpose
The Zultan RAW Series 18" Jazz Ride has very nice stick definition, with a nice bell. It's a chunky piece of bronze that is suprisingly crashable. I find no negatives in this model. The hand hammering is gorgeousely done. A true working art piece.
