Waldorf Protein

This sounds like nothing else I own. It has gritty 8 bit wavetable oscillators with authentic aliasing and some additional noise generators to make it sound even dirtier, but in a most positive kind of way. It reminds me a bit of the sound character of my old Amiga computer, but in a kind of "dirty hi-fi" flavor. FX are really good too.

UI is good, for the most part intuitive and easy to use. I don't mind simplified envelope controls, only the FX controls can be a bit fiddly to use at first. Build quality feels good as do all the controls. It packs a lot of interesting features, and while it's obviously no Iridium, for the price and form factor it's pretty impressive. It's even multitimbral. Sadly you can't exclude individual parts from FX or use different FX on different parts (at least not at the time of this review), so the most useful modes are round/random robin or layered (which are great). Multitimbrality is also very easy to set up, you can even load individual parts from other presets.

All in all, this is not your typical all purpose bread&butter type of synth, even though it can do any type of sound and it sounds gorgeous, even the raw oscillators, not to mention if you put it through some nice reverb to augment those nice harmonics it produces. But it definitely has a specific character, which is quite the opposite of most modern ultra clean sounding softsynths. Great stuff.

Ich hatte keine übertriebenen Erwartungen an einen Synthesizer für 329€ gehabt. Nach Sichtung der ersten Youtube-Demos wusste ich, was für ein Sound mich in etwa erwartet. Ich habe mich unheimlich auf meine erste Waldorf-Maschine gefreut und wurde nicht enttäuscht:
Sehr gute, selbsterklärende Bedienung. Der Formfaktor und das Konzept sind durchdacht und genial. Man kann sehr schnell intuitiv an den Sounds schrauben und hat trotzdem viele Möglichkeiten. Alles ist schnell erreichbar.
Der Sound geht von kristall, glockig, flächig bis richtig dreckig brutal (drive, dirt, noise). Durch die 4 unabhängigen Layer (4x multitimbral) kann man völlig unterschiedliche Sounds/Presets layern oder sogar unabhängig auf dedizierten Midikanälen ansteuern. Wahnsinn bei dem Preis! Die ausgiebige Modulationsmatrix und die 2fache FX-Sektion mit richtig hochwertigen Effekten erweitern die Möglichkeiten des Sounddesign nochmal in ganz andere Richtungen.
Waldorf zeigt, dass es seinen Fans sehr nahe steht und das muss ich hoch anrechnen. Mir ist es unheimlich viel Wert, dass Rolf Wöhrmann sich als Chef persönlich an vielen Orten (Foren, Podcasts) zur Rede stellt. Kommunikation = Top!
Ein paar Feinheiten werden und wurden schon per Firmware noch nachgeliefert. Auch weitere Features sind in Planung und kommen sicherlich bald.
Vielen Dank für dieses krasse Gerät. Ich freue mich schon auf weitere Machinen aus der Serie.

Enfin un synthé qui synthetise, pas une machine a presets (mc101)
et avec des effets intégrés!
J'avais besoin d'un truc petit, polyphonique avec du caractère et un delay au minimum et la reverb aussi......
Tout est dans la boite! Solide vite pris en main (après lecture rapide du manuel )
Les défaut d'ergonomie (adsr, shift) sont vite oubliés . Surtout avec la derniere mise a jour (shift latch et blocage des 3 dernières waves)
J'aime les sons d'orgue (drawbar, rotary wheel) et j'ai rapidement réussi a me créer des patchs qui me conviennent
J'aime aussi le caractère, le grain voire le sale.... et là je suis comblé on peut aisément rendre les sons rugeux a souhait.
Il sais aussi se faire très propre au besoin.
Ca sonne, on a des accès directs pour sculpter le son en live .
C'est une machine qui donne envie de jouer avec!! et sous les touches du clavier elle est très vivante ... velocité et aftretouch se patchent aisément pour faire vivre le son!
Pas fini d'explorer, faut que je me mette a faire qq squelshes pour finir de l'adorer.
pour l'instant le nombre wavetables ne me limite pas , mais a voir sur la durée si je tiens sans pouvoir en ajouter des persos.

C'est solide , l'écran est petit certes mais précis et suffisant. les fonctions shift en bleu sur noir dures a voir dans la pénombre?? on sais très vite où appuyer sans avoir a lire!!
