Classic UA preamps on a compact interface
The Universal Audio Volt 1 is a high-quality USB audio interface designed for home recording, podcasting, and content creation – at an affordable price. Featuring a single XLR/jack combo input, two balanced line outputs, and conversion rates of up to 24-bit/192kHz, the Volt 1 delivers outstanding professional-grade sound quality in a compact and portable format. This versatile mic preamp has two operational modes: A clean and modern setting, and a Vintage Mode, which emulates the warm, analogue character of the legendary UA 610 valve preamp - introducing gentle saturation and a subtle treble lift, and adding richness and depth to vocals and instruments. For those who require built-in compression, the Universal Audio Volt 176 includes a genuine UA 1176-inspired analogue compressor. The Volt 1 is fully compatible with Windows 10 and later, macOS 10.14 and later, and iOS 14 and later for mobile recording.
Professional-quality recording made simple
Designed and engineered for studio-quality recordings, the Universal Audio Volt 1 includes all the necessary features and tools for capturing vocals, instruments, and podcasts with pristine clarity. Its mic preamp provides a 55dB gain range, ensuring ample headroom for dynamic and condenser microphones, while maintaining an ultra-low noise floor. The 48V phantom power guarantees compatibility with condenser microphones, and for zero-latency monitoring, the direct monitoring function allows real-time playback of the input signal alongside the DAW mix. A mono/stereo switch provides additional flexibility when monitoring different sources. The dedicated headphone output features a powerful amplifier, capable of driving low-impedance headphones at high volume levels with minimal distortion, ideal for tracking or mixing. The USB-C port is PC, Mac, iPhone, and iPad compatible.
Designed for home studios, podcasting, and streaming
The Universal Audio Volt 1 is built for modern creators. Its hybrid XLR/jack input accommodates microphones, instruments, and line-level sources, allowing seamless recording across different setups. The Hi-Z mode ensures optimum performance with electric guitars and basses, while phantom power supports condenser microphones for vocal or spoken-word applications. Podcasters and streamers just need to connect a studio-quality microphone and immediately take advantage of the clean preamps for clear and intelligible speech, with no extra processing. The Volt 1 is simple and intuitive to operate, making it an excellent choice for beginners, its solid metal casing can be trusted on the road, and its low-noise, high headroom preamps ensure clean and professional results.
About Universal Audio
Few manufacturers can draw upon a wealth of audio engineering experience comparable to that of Universal Audio. The company's founding father Bill Putnam, along with his friend Les Paul, have an admirable reputation as trend-setting music producers and developers of legendary analogue studio technology. Putnam recorded Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, and Sarah Vaughan, and was Duke Ellington's favourite sound engineer. He developed the famous 1176 Peak Limiter and distributed the Teletronix LA-2A level amplifier. This earned him a posthumous "Technical Grammy Award" in 2000. In 1999, Putnam's sons, Bill Putnam Jr. and James Putnam, re-founded Universal Audio, transferring their father's analogue vision and craftsmanship to the digital music world. Their product range includes audio interfaces, dedicated DSP farms, and a variety of plug-ins, as well as analogue hardware devices.
A portable solution for high-quality sound
The Universal Audio Volt 1 can sit at the heart of any home studio, providing premium audio performance in a compact and lightweight design. It is USB bus-powered, eliminating the need for an external power supply and making the Volt 1 ideal for recording on the go. An additional USB power cable is included, to ensure operation with all mobile devices. The Volt 1's sturdy metal chassis is rugged and durable, while a Kensington security slot protects it from theft in mobile setups. Whether in studio or location recording scenarios, the Volt 1 delivers a consistent, high-fidelity sound for musicians, content creators, and professionals who need a straightforward, reliable, and portable recording solution.
