The portable SSL console

The SSL 12 is a USB-C audio interface with 12 inputs and 8 outputs that brings the studio-focused design philosophy of Solid State Logic to a compact desktop format. Compared with the earlier SSL 2 and SSL 2+ models, it offers expanded connectivity along with greater flexibility for a wider range of recording and production tasks. Integration with the SSL 360° software extends its functionality further, providing comprehensive control over monitoring, independent headphone mixes, and a variety of system settings. The integrated 4K Legacy mode is inspired by classic SSL consoles, allowing users to use the unit's character and sound from a compact and accessible setup. Combined with its versatile feature set and streamlined workflow, the SSL 12 is well suited to musicians, producers, and content creators looking for a capable desktop interface.

High-quality connections

The SSL 12 is equipped with four microphone preamps connected via rear-panel combo inputs, alongside two front-panel Hi-Z instrument inputs designed to capture a wide range of recording sources. With an equivalent input noise figure of -130dBu EIN and up to 62dB of gain, the preamps provide ample headroom for a variety of microphones, while an ADAT input allows the system to be expanded with up to six additional channels. On the output side, the interface offers four balanced line outputs and two independently configurable stereo headphone outputs to support flexible monitoring setups. Its line outputs operate at levels of up to +24dBu, making integration with external analogue equipment straightforward. Combined with 32-bit conversion and a dynamic range exceeding 120dB, the SSL 12 delivers detailed monitoring and recording performance within a compact desktop format.

The SSL sound for use at home

With its SSL-inspired sound character and the expanded functionality provided by the SSL 360° software, the SSL 12 is aimed at musicians, producers, and recording engineers seeking a flexible desktop audio interface. It combines a comprehensive feature set with high-quality audio performance in a compact format, offering an accessible option for professional recording, mixing, and production without the footprint of a larger studio system. Its dimensions make it equally suitable for home studios, smaller production spaces, and mobile recording setups where desk space is limited. The familiar SSL design reflects the company's established studio heritage while maintaining a clean and practical desktop layout. Overall, the SSL 12 balances connectivity, sound quality, and workflow in a format suited to a wide range of production environments.

About SSL

Solid State Logic (SSL), is a renowned British manufacturer of high-end mixing consoles and hardware. It was founded in 1969 by Colin Sanders and is based in Begbroke, Oxfordshire. Initially the company developed transistors to control church organs, hence the name Solid State Logic. At the end of the 1970s they made huge advances in the domain of large mixing consoles with the 4000 series which pioneered the oncoming era of the ‘super’ consoles. Later, the 6000 and 9000 series also proved to be a great success and are still being used in countless recording studios all over the world. In 2005, Peter Gabriel and David Engelke took a majority stake in the company and then sold it to the Audiotonix Group in 2017.

Performance and flexibility

The SSL 12 is designed to serve as the central hub of a recording setup, supporting recording, mixing, and music production within a single compact interface. During recording, it provides high-quality microphone preamps alongside a talkback function and a software-based cue mixer, while mixing workflows benefit from alternative monitor switching and assignable controls for greater flexibility. For production, MIDI In/Out and DC-coupled outputs enable integration with synthesisers and other external hardware, extending the interface beyond conventional audio duties. The included SSL Production Pack adds a selection of virtual instruments, plug-ins, and DAW software, providing a solid foundation for a range of recording and production tasks. Whether used in a studio, home workspace, or mobile setup, the SSL 12 offers a versatile platform for audio production across a variety of applications.
