A real shape-shifter

Slate Digital ML-1A modelling microphone

The Slate Digital ML-1A is much more than a conventional large-diaphragm condenser microphone. Used alongside Slate's included Virtual Microphone System (VMS) plugin, it provides access to advanced emulations spanning tube, condenser, and ribbon microphones, turning a single neutral condenser capsule into a remarkably versatile studio tool. Two microphone models can even be combined and blended to create hybrid sound signatures, drawing on the sonic character of each model. VMS preamps further shape the sound, introducing saturation and analogue-style character to the signal. The ML-1A itself is equally capable of handling demanding sources: Its three-position 0/-10/-20dB pad raises maximum SPL to 145dB at the -20dB setting, while an 86dB signal-to-noise ratio provides ample headroom for vocals and instruments alike.

Give neutral sound a new shape

At the heart of the ML-1A is a 1" condenser capsule with a deliberately neutral frequency response. This linearity is key to providing the clean foundation required for VMS modelling, allowing the algorithms to operate consistently across the different tonal characteristics of each emulation. Microphone models are selected and adjusted within the plugin, which goes beyond straightforward emulation with a range of additional sound-shaping tools. The Proximity slider, for instance, simulates the characteristic bass lift (also known as the proximity effect) produced when a directional microphone is positioned close to a source, independently of the ML-1A's actual placement. Mono-to-stereo processing can widen vocals and overdubs, while a rumble filter reduces unwanted low-frequency noise such as footfall and mechanical vibration.

One mic, many voices

The ML-1A is aimed at producers and engineers looking for maximum flexibility with minimal hardware. Rather than investing in and storing a large collection of specialised microphones, it provides access to a customisable palette of classic and modern studio sounds – from smooth tube-mic characteristics for vocals to more direct, transient-focused models for percussion or acoustic instruments. Ribbon emulations offer a softer, more natural character for acoustic guitar or strings, while large-diaphragm condenser models help vocals sit clearly and confidently in the mix. Model Morphing expands the palette further by blending the characteristics of two microphones, creating unique sound signatures. At present, 18 microphone models are permanently included with VMS, with a further 20 available for three months through the bundled subscription. The plugin's tagging and filtering system makes suitable models easy to find and audition, even after recording.

About Slate Digital

Founded in 2008 by Steven Slate and Fabrice Gabriel, Slate Digital is headquartered in the shadow of the Hollywood Hills, with an additional location in Grenoble, France. Known for their meticulously crafted DSP plugins and audio equipment, the company has quickly earned a reputation for delivering authentically analogue sound. Manufactured exclusively in the United States, their products include best-selling microphones and software solutions that have become staples in professional audio production. Slate Digital's innovative approach has cemented their position as a key player in the professional audio industry.

Precise emulation in practice

The ML-1A's neutral capture makes it possible to leave microphone choice open beyond the recording stage. Recording the unprocessed signal allows different VMS models to be auditioned later in the context of the full mix, rather than committing to a particular microphone character while tracking. This becomes particularly useful in practice, as models can be compared and adjusted according to how the recorded source sits alongside the rest of the production. The emulations take into account not only frequency response but also characteristics such as saturation, harmonic colouration, and non-linear behaviour, allowing anything from dense, warm vocals to more open and detailed modern productions. EQ, compression, and other processing can then be applied once the desired model has been chosen. For the modelling to work from the cleanest possible source, any DSP or tonal processing built into the audio interface or its control software should be disabled.

Suprisingly Good

I purchased the Steven Slate ML-1A from Thomann partly through being interested in trying a modeling microphone versus the rest of my mic locker, but also to give Thomann business in response to them taking Fender to task, so a semi-impulse buy. I have to say I am glad I indulged myself!

Firstly the quality was noticeable straight out of the Box, packing suggested a professional item and that is what I bought. The mic feels weighty and well made, looks good and thankfully sounds great, I did a shoot out against several other Mics, it was noticeably well balanced, (maybe neutral is a better word) and comfortably competed (or in many cases bettered) the other mics in my shootout.

Then I tried the virtual microphone system software and it made me smile instantly. flicking between the different models I was able to find the nuances that suit my voice perfectly. The bundled pre-amps added some nice tonality, and the fact 2 microphones can be loaded at the same time is amazing. I love the Radio France Signature pack, especially the RF-Amethyst, which I assume is based on the JZ amethyst microphone. I love the JZ stuff, so that was a bonus for me.

I love it so far, as an impulse buy I am very very impressed.

Vorteile gegenüber Ml1 aber nicht im Sound
Tonstudio Weiden 14.05.2025

Was mir gefallen hat:
• Sehr klarer, direkter Klang – vor allem im Mittenbereich
• Besserer Rauschabstand als das ältere ML-1, was bei leisen Stellen oder Dynamik hilft
• Klingt auch ohne Emulation schon wie ein modernes Studiomikrofon, gut einsetzbar für Rap, Sprache, Gesang
• Flexibel, weil man auf Wunsch trotzdem jederzeit Emulationen nutzen kann

Was mir gefehlt hat:
