High end, low price

Sennheiser E835-S Dynamic microphone

The Sennheiser E835-S is a cardioid dynamic microphone for vocals and speech that delivers a sound which is assertive, present, and clearly defined in the high frequencies. Even when singers spontaneously change the pick-up angle and move further away from the capsule, the E835-S delivers consistent transmission quality, thus ensuring a wide sweet spot and making handling very straightforward. In contrast to the regular E835, the S model has an on/off switch, and its very robust design also reliably protects the microphone from damage. These features, combined with its attractive pricing, make the Sennheiser E835-S a superb entry-level microphone. A matching carrying pouch and microphone clamp (MZQ 800) are also included.

Assertive but not aggressive

Sennheiser's specs have the transmission range of the E835-S covering 40Hz to 16kHz. After only a quick look at the transmission range given in the technical data, experienced eyes will note that there is a boost between 3kHz and 10kHz, as well as a slight dip at 7kHz. This ensures a present, assertive sound while delivering a high level of speech intelligibility, with a notable suppression of harsh, aggressive sibilants. At 2.7mV/Pa, the very high free-field idle transmission ratio – also known simply as sensitivity – is higher than is typically the case for dynamic microphones, helping the E835-S achieve a comparatively powerful output.

Effortlessly impressive

The Sennheiser E835-S is an excellent choice for anyone interested in a solid alternative to that well-known American microphone with a 58 in its name, offering excellent sound with a level of speech intelligibility and assertiveness that is almost unmatched in this price category. The E835-S is, ultimately, a fairly rudimentary dynamic microphone – this is the reason for its low price, in that it does without a lot of potentially unnecessary technical gimmicks. However, there is one small detail that the engineers at Sennheiser have come up with: The capsule is elastically mounted, making it less sensitive to handling noise.

About Sennheiser

In June 1945, Prof. Fritz Sennheiser founded the Wennebostel Laboratory, which initially produced measuring equipment. Commissioned by Siemens in 1945, the young company developed the MD-1 microphone, which was launched in 1946. After the development of further microphones, the company was renamed Sennheiser Electronic in 1958. Two years later, Sennheiser introduced the MD 421 dynamic microphone, which is still in production today and still held in high esteem by many sound engineers. Further groundbreaking developments, such as the HD 414 headphones and the classic MD 441 microphone, hugely enhanced the company's international reputation, eventually making Sennheiser one of the leading manufacturers of microphone and headphone systems in the world.

Live and in the studio

The Sennheiser E835-S is perfectly tailored to the human voice in all its nuances, and as such it excels at capturing both vocals and speech. Be it live, in the rehearsal room, or in the home studio: The bold, forward sound and high level of speech intelligibility guarantee a top-quality acoustic result. In addition, the robust metal housing and the wire mesh grille reliably protect the mic from mechanical influences, so that hard-rocking live shows or clumsy studio techs aren't a problem. The on/off switch ensures that the microphone can be instantaneously muted if there is any risk of feedback.

A
Great mic for live performance
Anonymous 29.07.2014
I had been using an SM58 for the last few years, having been told they were the best. However, I always had problems using the SM58, having to keep the volume lowered to avoid feedback and the need to shout rather than sing into it. I was fed up and desperate so searched online and discovered the Sennheiser E835s. Other bandmates discouraged me from buying it as they said it couldn't be any good at that low price...However - I ignored them and purchased this mic. Oh my gosh what a difference this has made to my stage performance. I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am! I can have the volume increased with no feedback, just fabulous clear tones without having to overstretch my vocals and no screaming into the mic. Now I can just sing and my voice is heard. Fabulous. What else can I say? Oh, the mic itself is lovely to handle, has a good strong weight, sturdy design and even comes with a little pouch. The bundle from Thomann was an absolutely amazing deal (inc mic stand - good as a spare - and a lead). I highly recommend this mic if you, like me, struggle with the SM58. I think SM58s are great for bassy voices but they don't suit all vocal types. Now I can go on stage feeling stress-free. Love it!

I bought it to start practicing in a looper. I found out about it in a YouTube review and it's good to begin at a affordable price. Still will get a better range soon.

K
Built like a tank and sounds even better
KuzmaFarkas 19.04.2026
I finally swapped out my old "industry standard" dynamic mic for the Sennheiser e835-S, and I’m honestly kicking myself for not doing it sooner.
The biggest difference is the clarity. With most mics in this price range, you get that "muddy" or muffled sound where you feel like you're fighting to be heard over the instruments. The e835 has this natural brightness that just cuts right through. I don't have to lean on the EQ nearly as much as I used to—it just sounds "right" straight out of the box.
A few things that really stand out:
No more "muffled" bass: You can get right up on the grille without the sound becoming a boomy mess. It stays clear even if you like to "eat the mic."
The Switch: I went with the "S" version because I do a lot of small gigs and rehearsals. The switch is totally silent—no loud thud or pop when you toggle it, which is usually my biggest pet peeve with switched mics.
Feedback: I’ve used this in some pretty cramped practice rooms with the monitors cranked, and it handles feedback like a champ. It’s very "focused" on what’s directly in front of it.
Durability: It’s got a nice weight to it. It feels like a professional tool, not a toy. I’ve definitely given it some rough treatment on the road, and it hasn't skipped a beat.

If you want a vocal mic that makes you sound clear, crisp, and professional without breaking the bank, this is it. It’s a workhorse that actually has some personality. If your voice tends to get lost in the mix, give this a shot—it’s a massive upgrade for a very reasonable price.

DL
A wonderful value-for-money microphone!
David L. 519 01.02.2014
I bought this microphone about 2 years ago. I needed a cheap yet effective microphone and with this microphone I struck gold!

I have used it or everything from vocals to guitar, bass, and drums! I've used it on everyone of my recordings since I got it and it has never yet me down. Not once has it cut off and given me any grief. I currently use it as my vocal microphone as a backing singer in a band and I'm always told how my vocals are very clear, even compared to our lead vocalist who uses an "industry standard" microphone.

This microphone is built like a tank and despite my butter fingers it hasn't eve chipped the paint! If you're thinking of buying this microphone I guarantee you that you will not buy twice, unless you want another one to add to your arsenal!
