Melofty Axom Max, Hybrid Audio Processor for Guitar

When a device has as many features as the MELOFTY Axom Max, it can be hard to know where to start. Of course, first and foremost it is a genuinely powerful guitar modeller, with a huge range of minutely and intuitively tweakable amps, cabs, and pedals that can be chained at will and played without any audible latency. Alongside the extensive factory library, though, MELOFTY's MFIM technology can also capture a musician's own collection of pedals, preamps, and amplifiers as digital models – drive pedals and an amp's preamp run straight in with cables, a complete amp setup through a mic on the cabinet – and it can load multiple existing NAM files and third-party impulse responses too. What makes the Axom Max really stand out is its extraordinary collection of other functions: vocal processing, multiple inputs, a looper, MIDI control, multichannel recording into a DAW, not to mention the polyphonic DeepSynth instrument emulations. None of this would matter if the guitar sounds didn't hold up, or if the device weren't well made. They do, and it is.

Complex custom signal chains

Centre stage on the MELOFTY Axom Max are two independent signal chains with up to nine blocks each, laid out on the 7" touchscreen like a virtual pedalboard. Each chain can take its signal from any of the four analogue inputs or via USB, and the two can run in series, in parallel, or split and merged again. The sheer variety and deep modularity give guitarists all the tools they need to dial in their signature sound. A combined amp-and-cab block saves a slot, for instance, so a full guitar rig and a DeepSynth voice can share a single preset. The freely assignable banks of footswitches (at two different heights, a real pro-pleasing touch) can then toggle between entire presets, call up one of six scenes, or act as stompboxes for individual blocks – bringing in the synth for a chorus, say. For those who'd rather skip the menu-diving, MELOFTY's AI Tone Model in the companion app can turn a text prompt into a starting point among the hundreds of amps, cabs, and effects.

Go beyond the guitar

The MELOFTY Axom Max moves into territory of its own when it comes to the parts a guitar doesn't usually play. MELOFTY's DeepSynth technology tracks an ordinary guitar's pickup closely enough that the huge range of synth emulations and other instruments can be played live – and the sounds can all be slotted right into the effects chain. A second, phantom-powered input gives a vocal microphone its own dedicated effects, while the effects loop returns can bring in a keyboard, bass, or drum machine instead. This means the Axom Max suits not just guitarists who like to experiment with their own tone, but also those who handle more than one instrument, be that the cover band guitarist who needs organ chords, a sax hook, and a lead vocal from one board, or the home recordist building whole arrangements from scratch.

About MELOFTY

Founded in 2023 and based in Changsha, MELOFTY is a Chinese audio technology company that describes its field as computational sound design. Its development work brings together disciplines that are usually handled by separate devices: modelling and capturing amplifiers and effects, analysing pitch in real time, and using that analysis to play synthesizers and instrument models from an ordinary instrument signal. MELOFTY pairs its hardware with its own desktop software, mobile app, and cloud service, through which users manage presets and captures, share their own sounds, and install firmware updates. As a young community, MELOFTY's Tone Cloud has fewer shared presets than long-established names, but with user captures, NAM A2 support, and IRs, the MELOFTY ecosystem is open to sounds made on many other platforms.

For people who play

For all its depth, the Axom Max has clearly been designed by people who play. On stage, it can stand in for an amp, a vocal processor, and a full pedalboard at once, with its assignable expression pedal adding further flexibility (there's also an input for a separate pedal). Preset, scene, and stomp control can be mixed across the footswitch rows, each switch labelled by its own dedicated, responsive display, while the light strip takes on the active preset's colour – handy on a dark stage. The stereo looper records up to 60 minutes with reverse and half-speed playback, and Bluetooth audio takes care of backing tracks. The balanced XLR outputs go straight to the PA while the jack outputs feed a backline amp, each with its own level and EQ. With the Axom Max cabled up to a real amp, its drives can sit in front of the amp's input and the delays and reverbs in its effects loop. In the studio, in turn, the board becomes an 8-in/8-out USB audio interface that records processed and dry signals at the same time, for a guitar and a bass in a single pass if needed, so a take can be re-amped through another preset later, with hardware monitoring keeping the playing free of DAW latency.
