Kali Audio IN-5

Ich habe einige Boxen bisher gehabt. HS80M, A8X, NuPro 3000RC, M1 Active Mk2. Im Wohnzimmer habe ich eine empirisch hochqualitative 4.0 Surroundanlage ohne Voodoo, die basierend auf Messdaten kaum zu überbieten ist für den Preis.
Und das ist das Stichwort. Das Preisleistungsverhältnis. Im Audio Markt kann man schnell 50.000 € für ein System hinlegen, das von zig Zeitungen schöngeredet wurde, aber messtechnisch relativ zum Preis total versagt.
Basieren auf dem 3-Wege-System, dem günstigen Preis, die ehrlichen Angaben des Herstellers und der allgemeinem Empfehlung zur Marke Kali habe ich sie ausprobiert. Wo kriegt man sonst bitte einen guten 3-Wege Nahfeld-Monitor für unter 1000 € das Paar?

Als sie zuhause ankamen, ging es direkt mit dem Anhören, Einmessen und der Raumanpassung los. Man merkt drei Dinge sofort: alles ist da, alles ist absolut neutral und sogar höhe Pegel sind Ermüdungsfrei.

Die Messung mittels REW ergab das, was Kali Audio selbst angibt - einen unfassbar linearen Frequenzgang für die Preisklasse. Auch der Bass ist mit -3 dB bei 47 überdurchschnittlich für den Preis.
Hier kann man jetzt denken, dass diese Tiefe nur durch massive Verzerrung erreicht werden kann, aber nix da. Der Bass bleibt super sauber und bei einem kleinen Raum geht es akustisch bedingt auch gern mal noch tiefer.
Der Sound ist übrigens wirklich sehr gut von den Boxen entkoppelt. Wenn man im Stereo Dreieck sitzt und die Boxen beim Musik zu orten versucht, wird man immer wieder zur Phantomschallquelle geführt. Verzerrungen und Resonanzen sind fabelhaft kontrolliert. Auch die Zeitrichtigkeit ist gegeben, Impulse kommen und gehen schnell.

Hier aber der eigentlich Clou, warum ich diese Boxen traumhaft finde. Die Anpassbarkeit! Zugegeben, die Kippschalter hinten an der Box hätte man weglassen können. Hier sind nur relativ geringfügige Änderungen möglich - zumal Kali Audio nicht mal angibt, was genau die Auswirkung auf die Box ist. Aber diese Box ist absolut EQ-freundlich! Stichwort: Sonarworks SoundID, REW, Equalizer APO. Ich habe meine Raumkorrektur mittels REW berechnen lassen, die Filtereinstellungen angewandt und war verstört. Oft passiert es, dass hier viele Boxen angestrengt, unausgewogen klingen, aber die IN-5 haben die komplette Korrektur von 20 bis 20.000 Hz ohne zu Murren übernommen. Hammer! Und Pegelfest sind sie auch. Ich habe sie noch nicht so zum Verzerren bringen können, ohne dass mir die Ohren vorher ausgestiegen wären.

Ich finde, diese Boxen sollte jeder mal ausprobieren. Hier kommen echt neuester Stand der Forschung, Technik und Kostenoptimierung zusammen.
Aber Meckerpunkte gibt es dennoch: Wie schon gesagt, finde ich, dass man die komischen Kippregler hätte weglassen können und stattdessen ein schwereres Gehäuse nehmen sollen. Den ohne Entkopplung finde ich, überträgt es doch schon seine tiefen Frequenzen sehr gerne an das Möbelstück, wo es draufsteht. Daher entweder auf Ständer platzieren oder anderweitig entkoppeln. Auch eine Auto-On- Funktion wäre toll gewesen, weil der Stromschalter absolut blöd unter den Anschlusskabeln liegt. Ebenfalls ist die Lautstärkereglung blöd zu erreichen. Ich hätte sogar 1000 € für das paar bezahlt, hätte Kali das noch ausgebügelt. Dann wären die Boxen wirklich perfekt.

This monitor is well designed, and offers a good balance of desirable properties. The coaxial tweeter + midrange combo delivers all the imaging advantages of the coaxial design, while offloading the bass frequencies to a dedicated woofer fixes the biggest problem with coaxials, which is that the moving bass cone provides an unstable wave guide for the tweeter, leading to intermodulation distortion. This means, when the tweeter sits inside a woofer, kick drum hits will distort the treble at higher sound levels. It can sound quite ugly!

A midrange driver has much less cone movement, so this common coaxial problem is no longer audible for this monitor.

A dedicated woofer can also be designed to go deep without having to be compromised to give good midrange performance. And splitting off the midrange frequencies from the woofer also means you won't get as much uncontrolled midrange frequencies leaking out through the bass reflex port.

The end result is a design that solves most major issues in speaker design elegantly. So what you get here is a "big 3-way monitor" kind of sound, in a small and affordable package that fits both your tiny home studio room and your tiny wallet!

Well, "smallish" might be a better word, these speakers are actually quite large for only having a 5" woofer. This is probably because the midrange speaker also needs some volume of its own.

While these monitors are very good, and an exceptional value, they aren't perfect. The boxes are made from too thin material and sound like bongos when you tap them... Not good! These undamped cabinet resonances color the sound and make the lower midrange sound a bit muddy. And the waveguide transition from the tweeter to the midrange cone is abrupt and non-smooth, leading to some deviations from a straight frequency response in the treble region.

That said, they do sound very good, and have a full range tonal character that extends deep in the bass, and they provide an excellent sound stage. I think they're a marvelous choice for a small home studio, especially if you require the ability to pump out some convincing low frequencies without distorting the treble.

But if you can live with a less extended bass and don't play bass heavy music loudly while mixing, then the Tannoy Gold 5 offers a more precise midrange with greater clarity and separation. That's a 2-way coaxial though, so it does suffer from the intermodulation distortion problem of that design. I would say the Tannoy is an even better monitor than the Kali, but its inherent limitations may make you prefer something else. Like these!

Che dire, seguo la Kali Audio da un annetto e ho visto solo recensioni positive. Ingegneri del suono importanti le paragonano a casse a 3 vie che costano migliaia di euro. Il suono è cristallino, anche alzando il volume di molto rimane pulitissimo. Immagine 3d del suono mostruosa. Chiudendo gli occhi riesco a "vedere" ogni strumento nel panorama stereofonico con molta facilità. La qualità delle frequenze medie è fantastica. Per chi avesse dubbi sul noise level quando non esce nessun suono, posso confermare che è quasi impercettibile (era l'unico difetto della prima cassa a 3 vie che hanno prodotto, l'IN 8 1st wave). Questo monitor, anche se non specificato nel nome, fa parte della seconda ondata (second wave) di produzione. Concludendo, la qualità del suono e della percezione stereofonica valgono molto di più del prezzo.

Simplemente los amo. Cambio completamente mi visión sobre el audio y las canciones que mezclaba o escuchaba.
Acostumbrado a mezclar en Yamaha HS5, esto abrió una nueva dimensión en cuanto a la percepción de los sonidos. Los redoblantes, las voces, las reverbs, delays, etc. Acá notas los detalles más íntimos y minúsculos que los grandes productores han realizado en equipos de alta gama.
Sobre todo se nota mucho en los medios/altos los detalles, quizás por sus 3 vías.
En cuanto al low end, no puedo afirmar 100% por que mi sala tiene un mal rendimiento acústico, pero la realidad es que no suenan tanto, posiblemente por que son 5Inch tan poco están diseñados para romperte el oído con el sub. Esto es ventaja si estás en un home studio compartiendo con gente o vecinos.
Por un precio muy razonable se obtiene un equipo super confiable de buena calidad. Difícilmente se adquiera algo mejor por este rango de precio.

J'ai eu des JBL LSR305, des Mackie MR524, des Kali LP-6 et maintenant ces Kali IN-5.
En quelques mots : la majeure distinction qui sépare cette paire des autres est la clarté du son.
J'ai acheté ce modèle en m'attendant à un bond drastique en terme de qualité de soundstage et d'imaging, et pourtant la première chose que j'ai remarqué à l'écoute c'était la "clarté".
Pourtant je ne savais même pas vraiment à quoi les reviewers faisaient référence par ce mot, mais en écoutant les IN j'ai compris, et je pense que vous comprendrez aussi.
Ce design en coaxial avec trois drivers a un intérêt indéniable et je ne trouve aucun reproche à leur faire.

Bon à savoir : le souffle sur ces enceintes est très discret, comme les LP-6.

Fantastic Monitors for Mixing and Production

I bought the Kali Audio IN-5 mainly for mixing and producing hip-hop, and honestly, I am extremely impressed with them.

The biggest difference for me is how clear and balanced everything sounds. The bass is present and detailed without being exaggerated, which makes it much easier to judge 808s, kick drums, and the low end in general. Vocals and midrange frequencies are also very easy to hear, and the stereo image is excellent.

I previously used 5-inch KRK Rokit monitors, and the IN-5 feel like a significant step up in terms of clarity, separation, and accuracy. They don't make the music sound artificially “better” — they help me hear what is actually there, which is exactly what I want from a studio monitor.

The three-way design and coaxial mid/high-frequency driver are especially impressive at this price point. The imaging is extremely precise, and I can make EQ and overall balance decisions with much more confidence.

I am using them in a relatively small home studio, and they work very well at moderate listening levels. For hip-hop production, I think they offer an exceptional balance between low-end extension and accuracy without needing to jump into a much more expensive price range.

For the price, I honestly don't know many monitors that offer this level of accuracy and detail. Highly recommended for producers and home studios.

Cons:

They are fairly large and heavy for 5-inch monitors
Proper positioning and room acoustics are important
Although the Kali IN-5 are exceptional for mixing and music production, they can feel almost too detailed for everyday music listening. They reveal imperfections in recordings very clearly, so if a song is poorly produced or mixed, you will hear it very easily. Sometimes this means that the overall music-listening experience is not as enjoyable.

Overall rating: 10/10 for the price.

Bin sprachlos was aus diesen Monitoren rauskommt! Ich habe mir einen ordentlichen, direkt und laut spielenden neutralen Monitor vorgestellt, durch den Koax auch zudem überragend gut in der Darstellung/ Ortung ist. in allen Belangen sind meine Erwartungen übertroffen worden. Nicht mal rauschen tut der, und laut kann er auch. Leider bin ich ein Verarbeitungs und Qualitäts Snob und daher bekommt es von mir nur aus Design und verabeitungstechnischen Gründen keine volle Punktzahl. Leider revisionierte bzw vibrierte es aus einem der Bassreflex Öffnungen, bei 50Hertz waren deutliche Turbulenzen Vibrationen zu hören Punkt bestimmt, weil ihn keiner Review es angesprochen wird irgendwas lose drinnen und schnell fixierbar. Ich würde locker zwei bis 300 € drauflegen um die Lautsprecher in einem ordentlichen Gehäuse mit etwas mehr Anspruch auf Langlebigkeit zu haben. Alles irgendwie billig und plastikisch ...Für jemanden bei denen das keine Rolle spielt, findet hier ein absoluten Preis Klang Hammer. Mir persönlich gefiel er auch in einer 1,40 m Stereodreieck mehr als der große in8 V2.
