When six strings just aren't enough

Harley Benton R-458MN LH WH Progressive Series, left-handed 8-string guitar

Harley Benton instruments have long offered solid quality at very affordable prices, with the range including both entry-level guitars and a few more unusual, extended-range options – including dedicated left-handed models such as this one. One of the most popular designs in this category is the eight-string R‑458MN from the Progressive Series, here in a left-handed version, which provides an accessible way to step into the world of extended-range guitars – and explore their powerful low-end sound without making a major investment. It all starts with a poplar body, combined with a bolt-on maple neck featuring a slim Speed-D profile: The maple fingerboard, fitted with 24 jumbo frets and a flat 355mm (14") radius, provides a smooth, fast playing surface with a clear, immediate response, while two high-gain humbucking pickups deliver a punchy, assertive tone. Together, this combination produces a sound with plenty of definition and presence, especially in the low end.

Extended range, familiar feel

The sound of the Harley Benton R‑458MN draws much of its strength from its extended 673mm (26.5") scale length, which provides increased tension on the lower strings for improved clarity and control. At the same time, the straight-scale layout keeps the overall playing feel consistent across all strings, meaning chords and position changes are more familiar, especially for players coming from six-string guitars. The electronics are kept simple and effective, with two high-gain humbuckers controlled by a three-way switch and shaped via volume and tone controls. A DLX bridge with individual saddles, together with a set of solid die-cast machine heads, completes the setup and ensures dependable tuning stability.

A budget-friendly way for lefties to play

With its very accessible price, the Harley Benton R‑458MN LH WH is aimed at both beginners and more experienced players who are new to eight-string guitars and want to explore this extended range without spending a fortune. That being said, the overall value on offer here is undeniable: Few instruments in this price category – and even fewer left-handed eight-string models – offer such a convincing combination of design, playability, and sound. The proven blend of tonewoods and high-gain pickups delivers a powerful and focused response, particularly suited to low-end riffing, while still remaining versatile enough for a range of playing styles.

Low-end riffing and beyond

Paired with a suitably powerful amplifier and speaker setup, the Harley Benton R‑458MN LH WH is well suited to tight, percussive low-end riffs with plenty of weight behind them. At the same time, the two humbucking pickups can be dialled in for clear clean sounds and dynamic crunch tones, which only adds to this versatile instrument’s appeal. And of course, Heavy Metal and Rock'n'Roll are as much about appearance as they are about sound. With its modern shape and striking high-gloss white finish, this left-handed model makes a confident visual statement on stage, leaving no doubt about where it belongs.

An Incredible Instrument!
KiyohimeHQ 06.12.2024
I saw this guitar a while ago and last week I finally pulled the trigger and got it.
The craftsmanship on this is fantastic!
It has a thin neck, very similar to Ibanez and Schecter (I used to own a Schecter Banshee 8-A). Regardless of the reviews on YouTube, the pickups are pretty clear and defined, but them being passive also helps.
Only "downside" are the tuners, not the most responsive ones. But let's be real... for the price, anyone can afford new tuners.

The ‘Harley Benton R-458MN LH WH‘ is a brilliant 8 string guitar given the price, it sounds good, plays well and visually looks good. For the price you can’t go wrong! Overall I’d give this guitar a 5 star rating.

Great value for money
Olivia Robinson 01.02.2025
By far the best budget option for a left-handed 8 string. Only issue is tuning stability but I found that replacing the strings with a heavier gauge has resolved most of the issues. Tuners could do with an upgrade but it gets the job done and is surprisingly well-made for the price. 4/5.

I can't believe how easy it plays!

This thing outplays most of my guitars in my inexpensive collection of Indonesian bolt-ons. I love the maple fretboard. I would pay twice as much for that feature alone. No fatigue on the fretboard. Easiest 8-string I've ever played!
