Harley Benton PB-62HA OW

First of all, this bass was exactly what I was looking for. I Wass already looking at the Harley Benton PB-62CC Olympic White. But when I saw this bass, I was in absolute shock. It was this exact bass but with better pickups and better looks. The aged look is amazing on this bass and looked the same as in the picture. The fact that even all the mechanic parts (tuners, bridge and even the strap buttons) are aged! And when I played this bass you could hear the quality.

Now for the minor points.

1: The paint is a matt olympic white. It doesn't have gloss, which looking back was to be expected I guess. but I Wass kinda hoping for a gloss. I think Thomann should specify this on this bass.

2: I didn't like the knobs they put on this bass. So I changed them with some aged gotoh chrome knobs.

3: I did need to lower the action a bit and the intonation was off (but not terribly)

But other then some personal preferences on style of this guitar, they did an awesome job with this aged series bass. (Also keep trolling Fender with these, watching them freak out over something like this always makes me happy)

It weighs 3,5kg, and the body is really resonant. The neck dive is unavoidable even with ultra-light tuners, but being so light, the dive doesn't bother me using a good strap.
The relic work seems made with laser because all the basses has the same pattern. It looks relatively convincing.
The fretboard is very dark; it might seem like rosewood. A bit rough, but it will smooth with use.
The best part of the bass is the neck. I can't find the words to describe the touch, but I'd spend all day passing my hand over. Just amazing. Actually I found the PB62 a bit too wide to my taste but I'm fine with this neck which measures the same.
Now the worst. The pickup is pretty underwhelming. Far too clanky. It has some depth and puts you in the Steve Harris vibe: depth with the clanky articulation. If you are into that is fine, but the pickup totally lacks the necessary push that I expect from a P bass.
Nonetheless, I find the bass absolutely recommendable; they've solved the weight issue, but in the order I'd add a nice pickup.

Au départ, je voulais le modèle PB-62 standard, mais il est passé "indisponible avant plus mois" du jour au lendemain. J'ai compris pourquoi à l'annonce de cette nouvelle gamme.

Alléchée par les commentaires du modèle standard, je me suis laissé tenter par cette version High Aged, parce que tant qu'à essayer un modèle relic, autant y aller à fond, n'est-ce pas ? De plus, le corps sur ce modèle est en aulne, là où sur le modèle standard on a du peuplier.

La basse n'est pas lourde pour autant : 3,8 kg à la pesée. Elle pique un peu du nez forcément avec un poids pareil. Je m'étais dit que je changerais probablement les mécaniques, mais j'en ai démonté une pour la peser et on est dans les 80 g. Mettre des mécaniques en duralium pour gagner 100 g sur l'ensemble au prix de la moitié de la basse ne semble pas une opération intéressante pour le moment, aussi j'ai préféré laisser les mécaniques d'origine, d'autant que le vieillissement est assez convaincant. La tenue de l'accordage aussi, par contre je trouve qu'il y a un peu de jeu lorsqu'on tourne les mécaniques, corde attachée.

Le nouveau micro Isola sonne Pbase, aucun doute là-dessus, mais manque cruellement de caractère. C'est cohérent avec une basse à ce prix, mais je vais le remplacer. L'électronique est simple comme attendu sur une précision, avec de petits potentiomètres, rien de foufou, mais ça fait l'boulot. La cavité n'est pas blindée, même pas de peinture conductrice. La configuration n'est cependant pas bruyante malgré un environnement peu favorable chez moi.

La basse est arrivée avec les cordes détendues. J'ai juste donné un quart de tour au trussrod, accordé la basse et c'était parti ! L'action était satisfaisante telle quelle. Le manche est très agréable pour ceux qui, comme moi, préfèrent les manches un peu plus larges de type précision. L'usure sur le dos du manche est plutôt réaliste, mais surtout très agréable à l'usage. Quelques frettes qui accrochent, mais rien de saillant, complètement utilisable ainsi.

Le "relicage" n'est bien sûr pas réaliste. De loin, c'est effectivement assez bluffant, mais de près, les "découpes" sont trop propres. Ce n'est pas raté pour autant, à voir comment elles vont se transformer avec le temps. 😇

Globalement, c'est un instrument très correct, surtout pour le prix, qui peut servir de base à amélioration selon les goûts de chacun. Très content de cet achat !
