Passive diaphragms instead of bass ports

The Focal Shape 65 is an active 2-way near-field monitor, designed around two Class AB amplifiers with a combined output of 105W RMS. It uses a 1" tweeter made from an aluminium-magnesium alloy alongside a 6.5" woofer with a lightweight yet rigid flax sandwich cone, which supports powerful low end and a natural, relaxed midrange. Covering a frequency range from 40Hz to 35kHz, it is capable of reaching a maximum sound pressure level of 109dB SPL. Instead of a traditional bass reflex design, it relies on two side-mounted double passive diaphragms, each 6" in diameter, helping to achieve a more defined and controlled bass response.

A wide range of settings

The Focal Shape 65 is equipped with both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA connectors, allowing it to meet professional studio standards while remaining fully compatible with hi-fi and consumer audio systems. Its low-frequency range, up to 250Hz, can be adjusted using a notch filter with up to ±6dB of cut or boost, while the lower midrange (up to 4.5kHz) and the treble can each be fine-tuned by ±3dB for more precise tonal shaping. The treble is managed via a shelf filter, whereas the midrange is controlled through a bell filter with a wide Q factor of Q=1, supporting broad yet natural adjustments. A selectable high-pass filter offers three cut-off options at 45Hz, 60Hz, and 90Hz, providing further flexibility depending on room setup and the specific sources. Alongside these extensive tuning options, an automatic standby function reduces power consumption to under 0.5W during inactivity, rounding off a feature set that is both practical and highly adaptable.

Professional quality for home and project studios

For users who do not require magnetic shielding in near-field monitors and can manage without digital inputs or jack sockets, the Focal Shape 65 presents itself as a high-quality speaker with manual frequency correction, making it a dependable tool for recording and mixing in home and project studios. It is particularly well suited to more advanced audio enthusiasts who value and can work with subtle sonic nuances in detail. Its vinyl-covered housing, made of 15mm thick MDF finished in a stylish combination of matte black and walnut, weighs in at 8.5kg, which also makes it a match for all standard speaker stands.

About Focal

A French manufacturer based in Saint-Étienne, Focal has been active in the hi-fi sector since 1979. Alongside a core focus on speaker drivers and high-fidelity loudspeakers, the company's portfolio has also expanded since 2002 to include soundbars, car audio solutions, headphones, and monitor speakers that are specifically aimed at studios in terms of materials, design, and features. The company's research and development centres and the majority of its manufacturing facilities are located in France, and Focal's speakers are designed according to the philosophy of uniting functionality and unique aesthetics. To achieve this goal, Focal also works closely with renowned design agencies.

Suitable for wall and ceiling mounting

For small home recording studios, the Focal Shape 65 offers a reliable reference point for evaluating the quality of recorded signals, maintaining clarity and consistency across different listening environments. It also provides flexible placement options, whether positioned on a desk, meter bridge, or stand, or mounted on a wall or ceiling depending on the studio layout. Acoustic decoupling from the surface can be achieved using suitable isolation pads or stands, helping to reduce unwanted resonance and improve playback accuracy. For wall or ceiling installation, threaded sockets on the rear and bottom of the speaker allow secure mounting with compatible brackets and mounting hardware.

Apart the fact that the Focal forget on many of the speakers turn on the standby switch in the box (google the solution out) the speakers have outstanding sound.

The feature I like the most is the space it is able to portray. It has beautiful stereo balance but the depth it has is something! This is is mostly handy while working on voice, which draws in to tiny details and help you keep them while you would just cut them out accidentally when working on less sensitive speakers.

The bass range is wide but I have a feeling that they are not that tight is they might be. But the bass picture is overall really nice, say not artificially juicy as others tend to sound like (to me).

Once more again, the highest value of these speakers is the details and 3D space they draw.

The downside of the speakers is the aforementioned standby mode, which if it works for you it does not let you work on low volume for a long, they turn them self off after 20+minutes or so (it would be handy to have a switch on the box that let us turn the standby on&off).
Another bit frustrating fact is that it has no Db correction on board ./
I would prefer to have all the filter knobs working in steps not linear as they are now.

As all speakers these are also sensitive to placement. I would not put them on table or any close to a desk..
If you do so, you ruin their potential.

Conclusion: Highly addictive speakers.

I think i found my monitors after a long run
Necrodegs 24.06.2025
Got the Focal Shape 65 for a small studio with wood walls and ceiling (no treatment yet) and the response of the monitors for this specific room are better then i expected, the auto stand by feature is perfect for me i would just say they can build a option to just turn it off and on as you wanted, i see many people saying thats a negative point but for me it is not actually.
No monitor is perfect, no room is perfect but i tested a lot of monitors over the years and this ones stand out for me.
