Full-range monitoring for larger setups
The Focal Alpha 80 Evo active two-way monitor builds on the foundation of the earlier Alpha 80, refining its design for a powerful and reliable listening experience. Its 8" Slatefiber composite woofer – a non-woven recycled carbon fibre material manufactured in Focal's workshops in France – works alongside a 1" inverted aluminium dome tweeter with integrated acoustic waveguide, shaped to deliver wide and even dispersion across the room. Each driver is powered by its own Class D amplifier, providing a combined output of 115W and a maximum SPL of 106dB. It covers a frequency range from 38Hz to 22kHz, combining extended low-end response with sufficient headroom for professional monitoring environments. With adjustable input sensitivity, tailored bass and treble shelf filters, and a convenient auto standby function, the setup adapts to the room rather than the other way around.
Connectivity and adaptability
Alongside balanced inputs via a 6.35mm jack and XLR, the Focal Alpha 80 Evo includes an unbalanced RCA connection, covering both professional studio setups and consumer-level equipment without additional adapters. Input sensitivity is switchable between two fixed positions (0dB and +6dB) rather than continuously variable – worth noting when balancing a stereo pair without a monitor controller. The cabinet features a bass reflex design with a large laminar port that adds low-end depth without overwhelming the mix. Manual room adjustment provides precise control over bass below 250Hz and treble above 4.5kHz, with an adjustment range of ±6dB in the lows and ±3dB in the highs – enough to compensate for most room placement issues.
For demanding studios
The Focal Alpha 80 Evo will appeal to producers and engineers who need greater headroom and more extended low-frequency response than smaller two-way monitors provide – particularly those working on bass-heavy material where accurate low-end monitoring is central to the mix. Its 38Hz low end and 106dB SPL ceiling make it a strong choice for larger home studios and project studios where the room can support the additional low-end output. It handles full-range material with confidence across music production, sound design, and multimedia work, though its larger cabinet and higher output are best matched to rooms with at least some acoustic treatment. As an active monitor, it removes the need for a separate amplifier. There is no digital input, and no variable input sensitivity control – both worth confirming against the intended setup before purchase.
About Focal
A French manufacturer based in Saint-Étienne, Focal has been active in the hi-fi sector since 1979. Alongside a core focus on speaker drivers and high-fidelity loudspeakers, the company's portfolio has also expanded since 2002 to include soundbars, car audio solutions, headphones, and monitor speakers that are specifically aimed at studios in terms of materials, design, and features. The company's research and development centres and the majority of its manufacturing facilities are located in France, and Focal's speakers are designed according to the philosophy of uniting functionality and unique aesthetics. To achieve this goal, Focal also works closely with renowned design agencies.
Mixing music and multimedia
The Focal Alpha 80 Evo performs best in environments where its extended bass response and higher output can be fully utilised – larger home studios, project studios, and acoustically treated spaces where the additional low-end reach informs rather than obscures mix decisions. The automatic power-saving function switches the speaker off after 15 minutes of inactivity. At 9.8kg, it sits solidly on professional monitor stands; four rubber feet are included for isolation from the stand surface, and threaded inserts on the rear panel allow wall or ceiling mounting using brackets with M6 screws at 70mm centres. Focal recommend a running-in period of around 20 hours at moderate volume before critical listening, to allow the driver materials to settle into their designed performance.
