Controlled monitoring for compact setups
The Focal Alpha 50 Evo active two-way monitor builds on the foundation of the earlier Alpha series, refining its design for a more reliable listening experience. Its 5" Slatefiber composite woofer – a non-woven recycled carbon fibre material manufactured in Focal's workshops in France – works alongside a 1" inverted aluminium dome tweeter with integrated acoustic waveguide, shaped to deliver wide and even dispersion across the room. Each driver is powered by its own Class D amplifier, providing a combined output of 50W and a maximum SPL of 101dB. Despite its compact form, it covers a frequency range from 45Hz to 22kHz, offering clarity and depth throughout. With adjustable input sensitivity, tailored bass and treble shelf filters, and a practical auto standby function, it adapts to different spaces while remaining efficient in everyday use.
Connectivity and adaptability
Alongside balanced inputs via a 6.35mm jack and XLR, the Focal Alpha 50 Evo includes an unbalanced RCA connection, covering both professional studio setups and consumer-level equipment without additional adapters. Note that input sensitivity is switchable between two fixed positions (0dB and +6dB) rather than continuously variable – worth bearing in mind when balancing a stereo pair without a monitor controller. The cabinet features a bass reflex design with a large laminar port that adds low-end depth without overwhelming the mix. Manual room adjustment provides precise control over bass below 300Hz and treble above 4.5kHz, with an adjustment range of ±6dB in the lows and ±3dB in the highs – enough to compensate for most room placement issues.
Home studios and podcasters
The Focal Alpha 50 Evo will appeal to home studio users, emerging producers, and content creators working in smaller environments where space and listening distance are limited. Its balanced response supports detailed work at moderate listening levels, and its versatility extends to podcasters, streamers, and video producers looking for reliable, space-efficient monitoring alongside music production tasks. As an active monitor, it removes the need for a separate amplifier. There is no digital input – for most compact setups this is unlikely to be a constraint, but worth confirming before purchase.
About Focal
A French manufacturer based in Saint-Étienne, Focal has been active in the hi-fi sector since 1979. Alongside a core focus on speaker drivers and high-fidelity loudspeakers, the company's portfolio has also expanded since 2002 to include soundbars, car audio solutions, headphones, and monitor speakers that are specifically aimed at studios in terms of materials, design, and features. The company's research and development centres and the majority of its manufacturing facilities are located in France, and Focal's speakers are designed according to the philosophy of uniting functionality and unique aesthetics. To achieve this goal, Focal also works closely with renowned design agencies.
Mixing music and multimedia
The Focal Alpha 50 Evo performs well in nearfield monitoring setups where listening distances are short and room acoustics can be challenging. Its controlled low-end response helps avoid excessive buildup in smaller spaces, making it a practical choice for editing, mixing, and general content production. The automatic power-saving function switches the speaker off after 15 minutes of inactivity. At 5.95kg, it positions and repositions without effort; four rubber feet are included for isolation from the desk or stand surface, and threaded inserts on the rear panel allow wall or ceiling mounting using brackets with M6 screws at 70mm centres. Focal recommend a running-in period of around 20 hours at moderate volume before critical listening, to allow the driver materials to settle into their designed performance.
