A 1950s relic from the Masterbuilder

Fender 50s Strat BKoVBL Relic MBAH

Back in the golden era of Leo Fender guitars, the emphasis lay on keeping the instruments moving swiftly from workshop to player. When a custom order came in, it wasn't unusual for an already finished body to be given an overspray in the requested colour. With years of heavy use on stage, that underlying coat would gradually begin to show through – a rare detail that still sets collectors' pulses racing. With the Fender 50s Stratocaster "Black over Vintage Blonde Heavy Relic", Masterbuilder Andy Hicks has recreated exactly this kind of instrument, complete with authentic ageing and the characteristic look of classic black over a translucent Vintage Blonde finish. The piece on sale here is a one-off – the exact instrument shown in the photographs, carrying all the subtle wear and detail of a Strat that's been well played over many years. The pickups are genuine Josefina hand-wound Fat 50s single coils – among the finest components to come out of Fender's Custom Shop. The guitar is supplied with case, strap, and certificate.

Carefully composed

Each Masterbuilder relic guitar is individually aged with a remarkable level of detail. Andy Hicks places particular emphasis on lightweight tonewoods and an authentic feel, and that comes through clearly in this 50s Strat. The ageing itself feels carefully composed – a cohesive recreation from the hand of a true relic specialist. From the visible playwear and the oxidation on the hardware, through to the subtly yellowed plastic parts that sit naturally against the Vintage Blonde undercoat, every element contributes harmoniously to the whole. Equally notable are the three single coils, hand-wound by Josefina Campos. At Fender, she's widely known as the "Queen of Pickups", and her work is recognised for its clarity and dynamic response. She was chosen by Abigail Ybarra – in turn, a pupil of Leo Fender himself – to learn the craft, and continues that tradition to this day.

A modern 1950s Strat

Strats from the 1950s are still known for their driving, hard-rocking sound, shaped by a distinctly percussive attack that carries clean tones and lead lines with equal authority. Even so, while this Masterbuilt Strat stays close to its vintage origins, it includes a number of details that make it a genuinely flexible and stage-ready instrument. This begins with the modern Strat wiring and five-way switch, where the bridge pickup is connected to the tone control. As a result, the guitar feels noticeably more responsive than its vintage counterpart, which was often retrofitted in exactly this way. The fingerboard radius is also flatter at 12 inches, rather than the vintage 7.5 inches; this allows for a lower string action, but without notes dropping out during bends. The unique instrument on offer here delivers the authentic sound of classic Fender models in a setup that'll give its owner an immensely controlled playing feel.

About Masterbuilder Andy Hicks

Fender is without question one of the most iconic names in the world of guitars and amplifiers. Founded in 1946 by Leo Fender, the company has shaped the landscape of electric guitars and basses like few others. Working in the spirit of those early years, Fender's Masterbuilders create both faithful recreations of legendary instruments and modern interpretations that take things in new directions. Andy Hicks has been part of the Fender Custom Shop for some years, and a Masterbuilder since 2022. After his training as a guitar maker, he worked as assistant to Gretsch Custom Shop senior masterbuilder Mike Stern, whose relic work and design ideas are widely regarded for capturing vintage character with exceptional accuracy. Coming out of that background, Hicks' guitars are more than simple vintage tributes. They're defined by authentic ageing and finely judged craftsmanship, all guided by a clear aim: Achieving a coherent sense of perfection in look, sound, and execution.

A recreation of a classic

The Fender 50s Stratocaster "Black over Vintage Blonde Relic" Masterbuilt by Andy Hicks stands out with its flawless playability and a convincingly played-in relic appearance. The aesthetic sits naturally alongside classic 50s details, including a single-ply pickguard, a substantial large-C neck profile, and the familiar early Fender headstock with its spaghetti logo. At the same time, there are specifications here that simply didn't exist at the time, such as the roasted birdseye maple neck and jumbo frets. What emerges is a recreation of a timeless classic, built to the highest standards by a Masterbuilder who has refined his craft over more than twenty years. With this Stratocaster, a guitarist can bring to life the sounds of players such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, or Mark Knopfler – and do it with the authentic vintage character and the light, resonant musicality of a truly exceptional instrument.
