Perfect flatwounds
Tutel 09.12.2025
It’s hard to put into words just how much better cobalt flatwound strings are compared to their stainless-steel counterparts. It feels like they’ve given me back all the overtones I lost when I switched from stainless-steel roundwounds to flatwounds. And they still keep that flatwound character, but only to the extent that’s actually useful, so the bass tone stays comfortable and mix-friendly in most situations. I haven't checked yet how they will sound in a couple of weeks btw. (Fender Player II Mustang Bass PJ pickups)

They do what it says on the can

These are marketed as middle ground between rounds and flats, and it is about right. The sound is pretty agressive, with lots of attack of rounds. Unfortunately, the feel is also halfway between, becouse these are nowhere as smooth as D'addario chromes on my other bass (both EB3). They feel quite sticky - but I will leave them the benefit of a doubt, becouse they might smooth out in time (or I'll lube them with FAst fret). All in all, I'm satisfied, I now have 2 same model basses, both with flats, but both sound completely different.
If you like a bit more agressive sound but don't like rounds, these are for you.
