Ernie Ball 2214 Mammoth Slinky .012-.062 Strings - Perfect for Deathcore and Low Tunings
blaz.evic 31.05.2023
As a deathcore enthusiast, I recently tried out the Ernie Ball 2214 Mammoth Slinky .012-.062 strings, and I am thrilled with the results. These strings are specifically designed for heavier genres and excel in drop C and lower tunings, making them a top choice for players who enjoy mid-2000s deathcore sounds.

The first thing I noticed about these strings was their excellent playability. The gauge is perfectly suited for the heavy riffing and intricate chugging that deathcore often demands. The tension feels just right, providing a balanced response between tightness and ease of bending. Whether you're shredding through blistering breakdowns or executing lightning-fast tremolo picking, these strings respond beautifully.

One standout feature of the Ernie Ball 2214 Mammoth Slinky strings is their tonal quality. The thicker gauge, combined with the carefully chosen materials, results in a powerful and aggressive sound. The low strings offer exceptional clarity and definition, ensuring that every palm-muted note and chugging riff cuts through the mix with precision and impact. The mid and high frequencies retain their clarity as well, allowing for articulate lead lines and soaring melodies.

Check the nut before buying!
Levenge 17.06.2020
Overall, this set is perfect for low tunings. I used it on my brand new LTD H3-1000 See Thru Purple and found out that the strings did their job perfectly on drop B tuning. It's a bit too big for drop B imo, the strings feel too tight but they do the job perfectly.

But after a few weeks, little by little I started feeling like something was off. After investigating the issue, I realized that the first two low strings (.62 and .44) were too big for the nut and they were standing higher on the fretboard than they should which made it almost impossible to get a proper/stable note when pressing the strings down.

Check your nut before you buy the set and see if they will fit perfectly. They stay in tune but the tension you need to apply on strings might result in shifts in the notes.

Really great strings for drop tuning
Travis John 25.01.2024
I’ve been using these strings on my Ltd Viper with a 24.75 inch scale length and I’m in love with them. They are great for drop B, drop A#, B Standard and drop A. You could use them for drop C on a 24.75 inch scale but I personally don’t recommend it as the tension is a bit high I’d recommend 12-56 for that.

Standard Ernie ball quality

Classic Ernie ball strings - it's similar to buying a 7string set and throwing the skinny string out.
I am not really a big fan of them apart from very low tuning - and in that case I prefer to use a 7string instead.

Might works well on baritone guitars, but gets a little muddy with lower tuning on standard scale.

Perfect choice for down tuning. You can easily tune it down to D on a 6string guitar and not worry about anything. Great for djenting. loved the strings.

Ernie Ball 2214 Mammoth Slinky (.012–.062) – Built for Heavy Riffing
Kennykiller04 27.07.2025
If you're looking for thick, powerful tone and extra tension for low tunings, the Ernie Ball Mammoth Slinky 2214 set absolutely delivers. With gauges ranging from .012 to .062, this set is made for players who need serious stability and punch — especially in drop tunings like Drop C, Drop B, or even lower.

Feel & Playability:
Despite their heavy gauge, the Mammoth Slinkys feel surprisingly balanced across the neck. The tension is noticeably higher than standard sets, but not overwhelming if you're used to thicker strings. They’re perfect for down-tuned rhythm playing, offering that tight, controlled feel that keeps your tone from getting muddy.

Tone:
These strings sound massive — full low end, aggressive mids, and solid clarity on the high strings. Palm mutes hit with real authority, and power chords sound huge and defined. Whether you're into doom, djent, sludge, or metalcore, these strings bring the weight.

Durability:
Like all Ernie Ball strings, the Mammoth Slinkys are well-made and hold up well under heavy playing. They stay in tune reliably once stretched properly and maintain their brightness longer than expected for such thick gauges.

Things to Consider:
This set is not for the faint of heart. You'll want a properly set-up guitar — ideally with a longer scale length or adjusted nut and truss rod — to get the most out of these strings. They're probably overkill for standard tuning or light blues/rock players, but for heavy genres, they’re perfect.

Conclusion:
The Ernie Ball 2214 Mammoth Slinky set is a go-to choice for players who tune low and play hard. They deliver tone, tension, and tuning stability in one beastly package.

Solid, thick, tight

They are good for what they are intended for - lower tunings.

Only thing to be cautious about is if your nut and bridge saddles can fit the strings. Had to file the lowest string's saddle of my Floyd Rose a bit, but I feel it was worth it.

Otherwise great sound and feel under the fingers.

Superb

Always used EB strings through the years and needed something for some drop tunage. These things are beasts. Took a moment to get used to the wound 'G' but its a really interesting sound and feel compared to regular strings.

6 string bass tuning
sarrum 25.06.2023
I have a 6 string bass and bought this set of strings to make also my guitar to tune as the bass. If you also play technical death metal and you are the only one in your band and don't want to split your brain to two. This is it man/woman!
