Legendary fuzz for guitar and bass

In creating the EarthQuaker Barrows, the boutique pedal experts at EarthQuaker Devices based the circuitry on that of the legendary Tone Bender MkII, squeezing all of its iconic germanium transistor fuzz sound into a very compact format. Two dials are all the Barrows needs to generate a sonic spectrum that runs the gamut from raw and snarling to creamy, compressed tones: Attack alters the level of distortion itself, with the Level dial (unsurprisingly) controlling the output volume. This simplicity means the pedal can slot right into almost every guitarist's or bass player's setup, giving them everything from singing vintage amp tones to vast, crushing walls of fuzz – it's not for nothing that EarthQuaker has dubbed the Barrows a "Fuzz Attacker". Like all their devices, the EarthQuaker Barrows is handmade in the USA using high-quality components, for a reassuringly robust build quality and the essential directness of true bypass switching. This is a pedal that won't just have fuzz fans calling out for more - players of more modern styles can also use it as an idiosyncractic alternative to traditional distortion pedals.

Focus the attack right there!

The EarthQuaker Barrows could scarcely be more straightforward to use: Each of the two controls has a clearly defined function, so sound shaping is never a chore. The Attack dials in distortion ranging from saturated tube-style crunch sounds all the way to aggressive chainsaw fuzz textures. The Level knob is also capable of more than meets the eye, finely adjusting the output volume so the pedal can be used both to give a guitar's sound a little colour and to really boost a dominant lead. The true bypass circuit ensures that any signal passing through when the device is off is left completely untouched, and there's also a red LED to indicate power status. Run off any standard 9V power supply, the slimline Fuzz Attacker will fit onto any pedalboard, however small or full it is. And as soon as it's switched on, it will deliver exactly that slightly compressed dynamic distortion that fuzz fans throughout the history of Rock music have loved.

One for the purists – and the experimentalists

The EarthQuaker Devices Barrows is the ideal pedal for guitarists and bassists who are still chasing that classic '60s fuzz sound, but don't to have to fiddle with a lot of complex interfaces or expensive tube amps to get it. Of course, fans of vintage tones, inspired by the raw and organic character of the Tone Bender MkII, will appreciate this modern pedal's reliable circuitry and build quality. It's hand-wired, like all EarthQuakers, and the use of germanium transistors in particular will be music to the ears of purists who value authenticity and a really dynamic response. The Barrows is deceptively slim, a good fit on both minimalist rigs and busy, full-featured pedalboards – this makes it ideal for traditional Rock, Blues, and Psychedelic musicians, but also for more experimental noise artists. The Barrows is a boutique fuzz for anyone after a clean, direct sound-shaping tool with enough unique character to inspire them to reach new musical heights.

About EarthQuaker

EarthQuaker Devices was founded in 2004 by the musician Jamie Stillman, who had previously gathered years of experience in the world of music and sounds as the manager of a record label for Metal, Punk, and Shoegaze bands. Today, his innovative pedal designs are among the most in-demand and desirable devices in the boutique segment, attracting interest from a huge community of musicians. Stillman is now in charge of a sizeable team of developers and technicians, who are continuously working from their base in Akron, Ohio to expand their catalogue of hand-made effects pedals. EarthQuaker Devices are used by renowned artists like Paul Simon, Coldplay, Tom Bukovac, Idles, and The Black Keys.

A fuzz for all seasons

The EarthQuaker Devices Barrows is a fuzz for all seasons – and all styles and settings, from practising at home or with the rest of the band to rocking out live on stage. In a classic Rock or Blues group, the Barrows will bring that cutting sustain and warm drive that will bring the lead guitar right to the front of the mix. Equally, musicians of all kinds who play more psychedelic or experimental styles can use the Attack control to dial in far more aggressive, not to say ferocious textures, ideal for Noise Rock or other alternative styles. Because it's so easy to use, it's also easy to integrate into an existing setup, and the true bypass makes it a flexible add-on for even the most complex effect chains. This compact Fuzz Attacker would even cut a fine figure in the studio, what with its combination of an authentically vintage sound and modern reliability, making it possible for creative pros to turn their spontaneous ideas into reality.

Great fuzz
JCarr 21.10.2025
It's my first tonebender, so I don't have any previous experience to compare.
The whole attack range is useable. I heard that the tonebenders don't clean up as magically as the fuzz faces do, but this comes close, and is also very responsive to touch in lower attack or guitar volume settings. Sounds great in both my small and big Oranges, and before light drive pedals. Amazing build quality as you expect from EQD.
