Handcrafted high-end headphones

Handcrafted in Japan, the Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa is an open-back reference pair of headphones designed for both professional studios and the most demanding listeners. Exclusively available from Thomann, this model features 45mm drivers with high-efficiency magnets, delivering ultra-detailed, transparent sound for editing, mixing, and mastering. The package includes a 3m detachable cable for unrestricted studio use, a 6.3mm adapter, and a protective carry pouch, ensuring versatility and protection for professional workflows. The high-efficiency magnets contribute to its detailed, low-distortion sound, making it a trusted tool for critical listening as well.

Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa

Extended frequency range for uncompromising accuracy

With a frequency response of 5Hz to 40kHz, the Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa's range extends well beyond the audible spectrum, capturing both deep, controlled sub-bass (ideal for EDM and urban music) and crystal-clear highs with shimmering harmonics. Despite having an open-back design, the ATH-R70xa delivers rich, tight bass tones – a rare trait among reference headphones – and a spacious, natural soundstage, ensuring accurate representation of every element in the mix. Its 98B SPL sensitivity prioritizes resolution and clarity, ideal for high-resolution monitoring, where precision matters most to both professionals and audiophiles.

Designed for professionals

The Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa has a high impedance of 470Ω. This means that a dedicated headphone amplifier capable of delivering the required output voltage is necessary to reach optimal performance levels – which is expected in a studio environment. When paired with laptops or entry-level audio interfaces, however, the headphones may not function to their full potential due to the weaker output stage. Nevertheless, the ATH-R70xa’s finely detailed sound signature – with extended highs, precise mids, and a tight low end – could convince many a hi-fi enthusiast who demands uncompromising accuracy. Whether fine-tuning a mix or analysing a recording, the ATH-R70xa provides the clarity and detail needed for critical decision-making.

Lightweight and built for comfort

Weighing just 199 grams without the cable, the ATH-R70xa is one of the lightest over-ear headphones in its category. The soft, breathable ear pads and gentle clamping force ensure long-lasting comfort during extended mixing or mastering sessions, while the dual-sided cable clearly indicates left/right orientation, simplifying setup. s
good osund but questionable design

PROS
Balanced, Neutral Sound, comparable to the Sennheiser HD 650.
Incredibly Light, provide comfort during extended listening sessions.
Good Soundstage & Bass Response: The open-back design provides a spacious soundstage, and the bass response is good for open-back headphones.

CONS
The headband design lacks sufficient clamping force for my (smaller) head, leading to a loose fit.

Not sure if this is a pro or con but it seems they are slightly rounded somehow, compared to Senn HD 650 and also Senn HD 490 Pro, let’s say that gives more of a closed back sound, might be also because they do not seem to fit my head and are too loose.

Was thinking to give it 3 stars because I think this is a big design issue, since I’ve not had problems with any other headphones fitting on my head.
However, since they would probably be amazing if I had a larger head, I gave then 4 stars.

J
Its NUTS how good these are!
JohnPaulMusicUK 12.03.2025
Ignore the others. It's these you need.
The frequency response is really good, lower mids are lovely (to my ears) and not too harsh on the top end. There is a drop off at the super high end but that's okay.
The band is REALLY thin and the protective band is held with small magnets and had to adjust for my supply large head but once I have the band adjusted, they feel...well almost not there cause they are SO Light!

Very happy mixing on these and will be using them for my next single and EP

Good sound but bad fit
SumGuy721 27.03.2025
While the headphones sound good, they do not fit well on my head or (I suspect) any other users head.

The cups are designed to be parallel to each other and do not have hinges to allow for rotation like most headphones have. The metal holding the cups allow for some flex to let them fit a bit better, but it does not flex far enough or quick enough.

As a result the cups only rest on your head in front of your ears without touching behind the ears. This is bad enough on its own, but with glasses the issue is even worse.

Super comfortable but annoying fit
Conduit 16.07.2025
I believe I have a slightly small head because these did not fit great. There was a large gap near the bottom back corner so it never felt like it was sitting well on my ears. Sound is good but I think the gap really affected the bass response. The magnet holding the headband is also not strong enough and comes undone too often. Too bad I feel like they almost nailed it but the fact that the cups don't rotate/make a seal around my ear and the headband magnet means it's been returned.
