AKAI Professional MPK mini Play MK3

Nachdem ich die USB-Buchse meines 10 Jahre alten AKAI MPK Mini geschrottet hatte, wurde es Zeit für ein neues Midi-Keyboard. Dass es wieder ein MPK wird, war klar: Preis-Leistung, Optik, Funktion, Langlebigkeit, da stimmt halt echt alles. Und für den kleinen Aufpreis dachte ich, die internen Sounds und der eingebaute Lautsprecher beim neuen Play könnten ein nettes Gimmick sein. Von wegen Gimmick: Das AKAI MPK Mini Play hat sich innerhalb weniger Monate zu einem unverzichtbaren Bestandteil meines Home Studios und vor allem darüber hinaus etabliert. Wie wunderbar die AKAI MPK Serie als Midi-Controller fürs DAW funktioniert, muss ich nicht mehr erzählen. Wer das noch nicht weiß, kann es in sämtlichen anderen Testberichten und Co nachlesen. Was das Play einfach unschlagbar macht, ist die Standalone-Fähigkeit. Ob zum Ideen-Scribbeln auf der Couch oder wirklich zum spontanen Jam (mega portabel dank Batteriebetrieb), sowohl die Key- als auch die Drumsounds klingen echt ziemlich vernünftig und man kann viel tweaken und endlos Spaß damit haben. Was ich gerne mache: Loopstation dranhängen und mit nur zwei kleinen Geräten stundenlang kreativ sein. Und als Lieblingsspielzeug für den 2-jährigen musikbegeisterten Sohn dient es auch schon vom ersten Tag an. Und das ist mir 1000x lieber als jeder Billig-Kinder-Ramsch.

Ich bin völlig begeistert. Natürlich ist das kein professioneller Synthesizer oder Drum Machine. Aber das sollte wirklich jeder Musiker daheim haben, die Einsatzzwecke sind so vielfältig und es macht einfach Bock. 5/5 durch die Bank, tolles Teil.

I got this more as something you can chuck in a bag (fits nicely, smaller than my 13" laptop, if thicker) and jam with or doodle ideas outside/on the go - think old Casiotone keyboards, just with a bit more functionality.

I wish AKAI had put a little effort into the sounds (it's the same old miditones familiar from every other beginner keyboard since at least the 80's), but being able to change the attack and release, in addition to the onboard reverb and chorus really save a lot and bring a lot of welcome mileage to the sounds. Those really save this keyboard as a keyboard.

Build quality seems fair, although the ball the modulation joystick is made out of this weird, scratchy foam that honestly looks like it's meant to stay in a prototype. I wish they'd gone with a 1/4" jack for the headphone jack, seems like a weird decision to go with 3.5mm jack on music equipment in this day and age.

The keys are fine, they can seem a bit stiff if you're used to other minikeys, but personally I like these. The velocity settings are fine and get better if you twiddle with them a bit to suit your preference, but out of all the minikeys I've tried these have a great response. If you can stand mini keys this'll do just nicely, they're quite plastic, but that's to be expected.

Overall, for a mini keyboard, it's good for what it is. If you have no need for the onboard sounds, definitely go for the regular MPK mini as it has better knobs (infinite vs. the 270° ones this has because of the features) and no real estate is lost to the speaker - plus you get other colors! I wish these were available in the different colors the regular MPK mini - I really don't like the color of this thing and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna paint the plastic case.

This thing would be great if AKAI gave the possibility to actually change the sounds or just went for better sounds. There's a lot of very usable, good sounds, but it's not exactly going to blow your mind. If they'd slap a sequencer or something on this thing to quickly whip up some ideas (chords + lead + drums) remotely, this would be a really awesome little beast. Maybe some day.

Ich benutze das Gerät nur mit den internen Sounds zum herumspielen/inspirieren - für die DAW habe ich etwas Größeres. Für diese Zwecke bin ich mit dem Gerät und den Sounds voll zufrieden. Selbst der Rock-Drummer findet etwas das Einen mit der großen Anlage echt umhaut!

Unendliche "Beschäftigung": Ich habe einen klappbaren Laptoptisch mit Multifunktionsnetzteil, kleinem Klinken-Mixer, XLR-Schwanenlampe und Gitarrenein- und Ausgang (einfach durchgeschleift) ausgerüstet. Damit kann ich selbst auf dem Sofa/Bett mit dem Akai und allen möglichen (Gitarren-) Effekten auf kleinem Raum "herumspielen" und ein Looper läuft für alle Fälle immer mit.
Der Sound kommt bei mir dabei aus kleineren Aktivboxen (dauerhaft am Mixer-Out angeschlossen, muß man nicht umstecken), wenn ich mobil sein will. Der Sound aus dem 3 cm-Speaker ist nur eine Notlösung und man verliert auf Dauer den Spaß.

Sonst noch positv: Keine USB-C-Buchse. Diese filigrane Buchse sollte man nur einbauen wenn es wegen der Datenübertragung von Nöten ist!

Negativ: Verarbeitung. Eine 3,5 mm PLASTIK-Buchse hat an einem Musikergerät nichts verloren. Bei meinem Gerät hat das erste Einstecken schon Kontaktprobleme bereitet. Entweder Ton oder Brummen, je nachdem wie ich das Kabel hinlegte. Das liegt daran dass der Stecker zu viel Spiel hat. In der Minibuchse sind 3 Kontakte (Stereo) und 2 Umschalter (!) untergebracht - insgsamt also 7 Kontakte! Und wenn sich beim Kabelbewegen der Stecker vorne in der Buchse einen halben Millimeter bewegen kann, kommt er an einen der Umschalter und es brummt.
Klar- ich hätte das Gerät umtauschen können - aber das wäre keine Lösung auf Dauer. Also habe ich die Klinkenbuchse gegen eine Richtige (6,35) ausgetauscht. Garantie futsch und eine eklige Arbeit. Sehr ärgerlich. Was kostet eine aus Metall mehr?

Parmi tous les modèles de claviers MIDI disponibles, ce qui m'a décidé à choisir celui-ci c'est la possibilité de jouer directement avec les sons intégrés (sur piles ou alimenté par USB sur le PC).

Finalement, si j'ai beaucoup utilisé les sons internes au début, pour essayer et m'amuser, tenter des trucs vite fait, je ne l'utilise plus que via des VST sur mon ordinateur, comme un clavier MIDI classique. C'est un peu dommage de ne pas pouvoir avoir les sons internes (et y en a quand même beaucoup, ça permet de découvrir des trucs) en mode VST pour les enregistrer. Pour quelqu'un dont c'est le premier clavier, devoir chercher des VST équivalent à ce qu'il entend sortir du haut parleur ça peut être décourageant. Mais c'est du détail, et il le fera avec ou sans sons internes sur son clavier. Aujourd'hui ce qui me dérange le plus finalement c'est de penser à couper les sons internes quand je le branche pour travailler sur PC, t'es là avec ton casque tu fais "wtf j'entends un bruit de fond quand je joue" puis c'est juste le "internal sound" qui est enclenché donc t'appuie sur le bouton pour le couper et c'est bon ouf.

Je trouvais les Pads très durs au début, ça sonnait pas fort du tout alors qu'en mode "full level" là t'entendais trop fort. Je pense qu'il faut un certain temps soit pour que les pads "se fassent", soit pour que tu choppes mieux la maîtrise de finger drumming, mais aujourd'hui je joue avec sans problèmes et sont plutôt bien réactifs à la pression.

Au final j'en suis content, et je l'utilise très régulièrement pour enregistrer sur ordi.
